I've made various changes to the site in the last two days!
You may wonder why I've been doing this while I'm supposed to be finishing off MARDEK 3 and deciding on sponsorship stuff... Well, uh, I haven't got any emails in the last day or two or three, probably because it's the weekend, and also because it's the weekend I decided to have some 'time off', especially since starting the sponsorship stuff was rather stressful and it'd be best to calm down a bit before carrying on with it.

I've still not decided on that, by the way. What to do with the game, I mean, distribution-wise. Either it could be a free-for-players sponsorship-only thing, or I could charge for it. I've not yet decided on the best option.

Anyway. Site features! As well as doing these as a change of pace from MARDEK, I sort of had to make some changes when the site went down briefly a few days ago... That was caused by excessive load, from heavy pages, so I tried to optimise some things somewhat. I didn't really do a terrific job, but oh well.
Here's what I've done:

- Various changes to the overall layout, like the gradient in the background, minor tweaks to the shade of brown used on certain boxes, a significant change to the bar at the left there (I moved the Latest Art and Music to the Main Page since they're so rarely updated and were only slowing down the load of all the pages (slightly, but still))...

- Forum posts were redesigned.

- Userpages were redesigned too, since they were some of the slowest pages on the site. I'll still need to optimise some bits though.

- 'Vital Statistics'! These are a new feature, of a sort. They have no significance at all; they're as useful as your 'Class' and serve much the same purpose in that they just show what you think about yourself or what you are. Mainly they express self-esteem; though you're free to set them as high as you like, doing so will just show that you're arrogant, narcissistic, or not serious or something.
You can set yours from the Edit Stats page... which I also redesigned.

I think that's it, though I may have forgotten something; I've done quite a bit. I'd like to know what you think, if you even notice the differences at all!

Also, if there are any bugs, you should report them, of course. And if there are any other pages you feel are in need of redesign, maybe mention those too. Not just for the sake of it though, please; redesigning takes a lot of effort and I don't want to redo pages for no good reason.

Hmm, anyway.
I've also been trying to change my typing as I think I said elsewhere, maybe on the last news post. Rather than improving my QWERTY typing with the asdfjkl; method, I'm now trying to learn to use the Dvorak layout because of its many benefits! It'll probably take a while to adapt to it though.
Which is a huge pain, actually, because most of what I've got left to do is writing... o_O

Hmm... What do I have left to do?

I have to finish various MARDEK bugs, which are mainly stuff like 'particle effects' and things. There's some writing too, though. I'll get through the list eventually!

I'm also going to do a Walkthrough/Developer Commentary thing. What this will be is a document, uploaded to the sponsor's site as a Flash file (.swf), containing 'brief' walkthroughs of each of the chapters (that is, it'd tell you where to go next and where the Trilobite Keys and other secrets were, but not what was in every treasure chest, exact strategies for every monster, etc), and a load of 'Commentary' sections about what inspired me to write the game, how I came up with each character and what their purpose is meant to be, etc.
This is something I could go into a lot of detail about just because MARDEK is really significant to me. It's got quite a history, spanning long before the first chapter was made; it's based on many of my older ideas from when I was younger, and is in many ways a conglomeration of many childhood ideas. As it is also 'art', I've used aspects of it as a form of self-expression; characters at times represent aspects of myself, caricatures of people I've liked or hated, etc. So there's meaning everywhere, and I'm sort of eager to explain it and maybe people are curious about reading such ramblings. I think it might be interesting...

I'll hopefully decide on what to do with the sponsorship stuff by the end of the week... but I can't guarantee that. I'll report if there are any changes!

This may sound strange, but... have you considered making the main quest free, and having to pay for the side quests, extra items, and so on? That way, people would get to continue the story, you'd get to involve sponsers on the free version, and you can have a fee for the full version, with all the side events and items and background and so on. Anyway, just a suggestion.

Go Pseudo! I've been seeing the Final Fixes progress bar creep up quite quickly! It was under 70% at the beginning of the week, and now it's at 75%! MARDEK 3 will be here before we know it! I hope that you make oodles of cash on this game, you deserve it!

hmm... Pseudo, make sure you let us know the instant that your sponsor posts it to his site (if you do decide to go that route). That way we can all give it a five-star rating and then play it! :] I wanted to give the other Mardek games 11 stars, but Kongregate would only let me give it 5. :(

Well, this will be my first post on this site ever, so I hope that I make a good first impression and don't break any rules. First of all, I love Mardek, it's a classic style RPG that allows you to think about your battle strategy rather than rushing you through a battle unable to think about what your doing, and for that I think Mardek is one of the best out there. I also love all story driven RPG s and I hate it when they're all about fighting without any character development. Pseudo, I think it's great how you add those encyclopedia with lost of side info, it adds depth to a game that I find lacking in most others. Never stop making Mardek and hopefully you finish Mardek 3 soon because i'm looking really forward to it.

The details make the game. On hearing these histories (and I might be stepping on the toes of a lot of my fellow gamers, but I really don't care what they think) and detail involved in the character development, I have changed my mind and would definitely pay to play this game if it would help. So long as you kept the story involved and professional, that is. I wouldn't pay much, but being willing to pay at all is a huge commitment on my part. Either way, I'll be happy. It doesn't need to come out soon. It just needs to be good and well worth whatever I'm going to invest in it (which really shouldn't take much depending on how much you're considering charging). I hope you get a sponsor soon, and good luck ^.^

Regarding learning how to touch-type, have you considered whether there's really a need to learn to type the "proper" way? When I looked into learning to touch-type, I discovered that through years of computer use, I can already touch-type (not 100% accurately, and certainly not 100% efficiently) but it's good enough for me. I'm sitting here in the dark typing this right now. You may find that you would only get a modest improvement on your already probably high typing speed.

I believe it was related to RSI but I'm not entirely sure, I can touch type too - to a certain extent. Using the traditional and "improper" way that most people using, where you use 3 fingers on your left and 1 or 2 on your right. I don't think I would want to learn to touch-type for the amount of effort it takes, but it might be beneficial to me if I learn something like the Dvorak method... (Since I'll be working in computers)

The system is not designed for roleplaying or 'making characters'; they're meant to show off how you personally actually are, or how you see yourself anyway.

No matter what you create them for, people will misuse them for other purposes. Let me give an example:

Diet Coke was created as a beverage for consumption.
Mentos was created as a treat to make your breath smell nice whilst being a tasty treat.

People used them to create fizz cannons. Thus abusing them for entertainment. You can't dictate how people will use what you create, that would be... well, dictatorship and people would just get pissed off and leave if you started commanding them to do this and that. I'm sure you don't want that to happen...

I like the new look of the site, and to be perfectly honest I would be interested in reading those ramblings. I've actually always liked director's commentary in flash games/movies etc.

There has been developer commentary in other flash games? Could you provide an example?

I don't know if he can give you examples, but I feel like giving you some:
The company of my own, nearly the whole game gets explained from the developers in the "credits" when you finish the game. [LINK]
Gravitee , where you can unlock information on how the engine is build and drawings from "in-the-making-of".

I can't think of a game off the bat, but the fabulous Decline of Video Gaming series has a 'director's commentary' option, which if selected, appears in the form of text at the top of the screen. throughout the video.

Love the new site design. Anyway. Like the previous comments, you should move the donate button (and the other buttons, if you want) to the side so they would be easier to navigate.
