I think I've been writing a few of these late recently... It's Monday now, but better late than never, eh?

Firstly, 'phew!' or something. For weeks now - since before I went away on my trip with my girlfriend - I've had hundreds of messages in my inbox thing on this site... It was just over 2000 recently, and several PMs, which had built up over a long period of time. I felt like I had to read, check and respond to them all, and it was really off-putting and made it feel like I had more work to do than I actually did, or something...
But now I have decided to just 'Mark All as Read', since most of them were 'outdated' anyway... There may have been some 'important' comments deep in there, but oh well... At this point I'd rather just not worry about it anymore, and if my inbox is empty, it makes it easier to check and respond to the most recent comments...

Anyway, as for progress...

I thought I'd have all the MARDEK 3 stuff fixed by the end of last week, but sadly, that has not happened. Not exactly surprising though, is it?
I got caught up with Raider, so I might put that off a bit for a while now while I focus on fixing MARDEK stuff. MOST of it is just polishing, rather than important features or anything, but there's still a bit of important (but optional) dialogue that needs writing, and I need to do the 'Walkthrough/Commentary' thing too.

Disappointingly, it seems that offers that I've been getting are not exceptionally high... and yet I wonder whether I should just release it for a relatively low price DESPITE the amount of time I've worked on it just because the idea of doing more on it (which would be necessary if I charged for it) hurts my head to think about...
I've been working on the game for so damn long now that I do indeed get stress headaches just from thinking about working on it anymore; it's why these last bits have taken so long. It's been much this way for years though, hence the slow progress.
I'd much rather get it out of the door and use it as a way of attracting fans for FUTURE games even if it means missing a money-making opportunity... So I do want to release it as free-to-play, I think I've decided on that now. Maybe I'll consider having a paid full version of MARDEK 4 or something... That one WON'T take years to make, since I won''t be redoing the engine or anything like that; I'll just have to make relatively minor additions to what already exists. I'll also plan it better, since I've learned from mistakes I've made with the development of this third one.

So, uh... I don't know how close it is to release, but let's hope that it's not far off now. I'll try to get all the stuff finished on it by the end of the week if I can. Even if it does give me stress headaches to work on it at all... D:

So yes... I'll perhaps release MARDEK 3 soon, even if I don't get all that much for it, just so then I don't have to worry about it anymore (and oh how emotionally satisfying that'll be!!! Freedom!).
And I'll get back to Raider stuff when I feel I've done enough MARDEK stuff. Yes.

Uh... I don't think I have anything else to report! I'll probably talk more about Raider once I get back to it.

Horrible to hear that you're not getting *many* or fair as it should be offers, MARDEK, this one in special, should always be considered gold, not just other flash games that people play for giggles, like most. I think that this should be your last MARDEK free game, make something like you did with the Official Soundtrack, like the pay AT LEAST 5 dolars, that is a great idea. There will be for sure a big slash at the fanbase, but I'm sure that it would be more profitable.

I'd take a pragmatic approach - i.e. don't look back on how much effort you put into it but look only forward and get as much money from it as you reasonably can.

DeNovo's marketing idea sounds good. I wonder if you could create a teaser or something that you could upload to Youtube? Or would that require too much effort? I guess people here would be happy to do some viral marketing for you, posting the link in relevant forums, Facebook profiles and the like. It's in everyone's best interest anyway as it might help make the project more economically viable without requiring payments from players. Then you'd see what exactly the reach is (and if it happens to be "nothing special", you don't have to tell the potential sponsors, and at least you know where you are).

Looking further ahead, I think it would make sense to go back to the "episodes" idea, i.e. designing future chapters so that you can release them in chunks that correspond to 3-5 hours' worth of playtime each. You can make it so that certain updates include the content of previous episodes too, just as M3 contains the first two chapters, essentially not forcing the story to be linear (though probably the order of release would indicate a preferred order in which to do things; but such an order is present in M3 too despite the whole thing being released at once).

I think if you plan to do it that way from the beginning, you should be able to do it, and if you can produce a more or less stable release cycle, say a new episode every 4-6 months, it could create a lock-in effect where you don't lose any existing players and keep adding new ones. (I'm saying 4-6 months because I think that's about realistic, taking into account your other projects and fluctuations in productivity.) In fact it might make sense to look at splitting up M3 in a similar way, though that might just be too much effort for too little gain.

This is a commetn regarding the Raider test. I'm not sure if you intended to have this or not but, when jumping you can also activate the "sprint" ability while still in mid air. You dont have to sprinting before you jump to get a long distance or "speedy jump"

Also, if this "situation" is in fact a problem then I hope it is easy to fix, but its not a big deal to begin with. If it isn't a problem and was in done purposely then I think its a unique idea. It allows for one more item perhaps? Maybe another level or a bonus level To me it doesnt make sense to allow Arkus to "sprint fly?" unless the item is some sort of "rocket boot" which would be is understandable.

First of all, I'm glad you're returning to the roots of Raider, Pseudo! I've always loved the exploration-based Raider Zero, and always hoped that you would someday return to it in some way, shape, or form. o_O

Now, I'm not sure if this is the place to report it, but I have found a bug in the new test room. It seems that if you stand at a certain position on a slope half-submerged in water, you will get pulled into the floor when you try to jump. [LINK] In order to replicate this, you must position Arkus such that his "lower ear" is just slightly above water level, then jump: [LINK] (Note that this is the taller sprite of Arkus' idle stance.) I have been able to replicate this in both water pools at the right side of the room, on either side of the pool and with Arkus facing both left and right (the pool at the far left is too shallow). While you are stuck in the floor, you cannot jump out or walk further into the slope, but you can get out rather easily by walking away from the slope. Now, I tried to repeat this whole process on a waterless slope, but it didn't appear to work, so I can only assume the bug happens as a result of the jumping mechanics in water.
I realize that this isn't a major bug by any means, but it still may be worthwhile to consider in order to fine polish the engine. It's pretty rare for someone to stumble across this glitch, but, hey, I did, and who knows who else may?. o_O

@ Anarchy, I too have discovered this bug (before reading this post). I stumbled upon it while testing the sprinting and jumping abilities, and was curious on what i did. Ended up with same patterns. However if I have also found this bug then perhaps it is worthwhile to fix it. Surely if the 2 of us have already discovered it then its bound to happen again, it may lead to further bug exploiting in future levels (ie. walking through walls, or something depending on where the pool is located.

my suggestion, if you care is to have flash contests after you release Mardek 3 examples include:
create an arena tournament
the create a mini boss challenge
create a house challenge
create a dungeon
or even create a village
Requires that you release the Mardek 3 engine but people will likely be able to rip it any way
the winners get their contribution added into Mardek 4 or later titles and the ability to beta test the next game
you get free material allowing you to pump out chapters faster and good beta testers.
what I get: Marked four out bigger and better and faster
Note as I envision it more than one winner is possible per category and no category has to have a winner.

I am already excited that Mardek 3 is almost done but how long do you think it will be till you have all of all of the Mardek chapters done? Once you have done Mardek 3 and Raider, you should come up with new ideas of games but that's my suggestion.

Agreed with Draconic. He's only ten, and mostly seems to be a lurker here. By being so rude and unwelcoming to him, you may very well be driving away a potential customer for Mardek 4. Besides, picking on younger kids is mean.

Pseudo's plans are listed in the Games section and has enough of them to last him a LONG time. The whole Mardek Series by all likelihoods won't be done for several years though.
The Games section can be found in the drop-list under the Creative heading.

ah pseudo, i am not that familiar with game making (besides some pacman/ mariolike thingies) but when you walk on a slope in raider, you just walk as normal but go up, resulting instanding with 1 foot half in the slope and 1 foot in the air if you stand still.
maybe you could work that out more realistic, again, i dont know much of it, so if its to hard to code, which it can be very easely, the nevermind

On Raider: The new level is much better. The old one was quite poor in my opinion because there was a too-heavy emphasis on wall jumping. The new one is great, and looks great as well. One tip: Don't go over the top on abilities. Some are great, but eventually remembering all these commands becomes more of a chore than a pleasure. Other than that, great new level and I wish for many more to come! Hooray for the NEW Raider!

On MARDEK: Keep trying. I hope that the sponsors give better offers. If it has to be a paid game, I'm willing to comply. Please release the game, I've been in suspense too long and so has everyone else! Just kidding, of course. Take your time. It's summer and I have a million other things to do, but MARDEK is just so awesome!

In the end, maybe place a "pay what you want" option, but make it optional. Remember your past experiences with the pay what you want thing, it worked great! Good luck to Pesudo!
