It seems it'd be a good idea to make a trailer of MARDEK 3, to upload to YouTube or something.

However, I don't know how to make such things and I don't have a program to do so... I'm also not familiar with how trailers are usually structured, since I never watch them myself. I feel like I need to personally learn how to make my own though because if I do, I can do one for every future project I make and put my YouTube channel to some use.

So, I welcome your assistance, people, in the following ways:

- If you know of any programs that are free and can be used to record the screen to make videos, with an acceptable quality and framerate and WITHOUT some ugly watermark on the result, I'd like to know of them!

- If you know of other game trailers - and I mean trailers for Flash or other independent games, NOT professional console games (as they're on a whole different level of quality) - then links would be appreciated so then I can see what format is expected.
It'd help if you mentioned whether you think what you link to is well-executed or not; I'd rather take influence from the good ones, not the bad ones.

- Assuming that MARDEK 3 is not significantly different to the other two chapters in terms of gameplay (it just has more content), what would you expect or want to see in a trailer?

Thank you in advance.

Camstudio perhaps? It has a decent framerate and it has a codec that you can download that looks pretty good.

There are a few things you will want to showcase to really let players get a feel for what playing M3 will be about:

1. Content. You'll want to show a flurry of short clips, showing new locales, and familiar places as well, with whatever changes you've made to them, and displaying the amount of music you've made for the game, along with how many playable characters, etc.
2. Mechanics. At least some portion of the trailer should confirm that the battle mechanics will be classic FF-style RPG battle mechanics, but also show off the new timing-bar based reaction system, along with being able to equip multiple reactions, and the advanced queue system for turn order determination.
3. Plot Teasers. One of the things people enjoy a great deal about your games is its humor, so it's probably a good idea to reinforce that message, either with your favorite moments from the actual game, or with intentional fourth-wall breaking things, like Mardek saying "WHOA! I CAN SEE NOW THAT SOMEONE HAS BENT MY VISOR-LESS VISOR OUT OF SHAPE TO MAKE EYEHOLES!!" That never make it into the game but certainly give off some of that signature Pseudo frivolity.

There's no good or bad way to organize these things, I think...there are two trailers which I still remember, and that probably makes them count as memorable:

Barkley, Shut up and Jam: [LINK]
Super Mario Crossover: [LINK]

I think, if you focus on showing players the things about Mardek which make it different from the other offerings, it won't matter how you organize it, but it's certainly not a bad idea to use this as a learning experience and upload rough cuts and see if we hear what you're trying to say in them?

I have seen a trailer for games like yours such as the ones at sinister design. Although I don't know if their trailers actually helped but they could be an example of what the trailer should show.

Hey, uh, did you try out the sponsors from M2? You probably have, and think that this question is full of ignorance, and insults you to even read it, let alone respond to it, but I honestly am just curious.

In addition, though, I am in a class that does this kind of stuff, there's some free software, but most of it will probably be unable to get it to look like you want, or do what you want... the video editing programs tend to be quite expensive. That's a big reason why I think this demo area idea might be better... just as useful in advertising the game, as different characters in the battle/area/whatever could say what you're going to say in the trailer... and possibly a lot cheaper, and less of a strain on resources is always useful.

Why don't you make a demo instead of a trailer? However, the demo would, of course, play like a trailer would work... in effect, it would be an interactive trailer. If the game's base engine is ready enough to apply to anything, at any time, you could let people see what parts of the game THEY'd like to see... almost like a "Trailer Park" Area of the game, only accesable through a demo... Pardon the lame pun.
