Pseudolonewolf`s Avatar So what's 'CBC', then? Sun 28th Nov 2010 3:28pm

Category: Games (FH)

Hello, this is a Weekly Update. This week, I will be finally talking about this mysterious 'CBC' project that I'm working on at the moment, since I'm fairly certain now that I will finish it, and soon, rather than scrapping it like some other projects. Usually I only scrap projects that I've barely started on, you see, but I'm mostly done with this one now.

I originally wanted to keep it 'secret' until the release so it'd be a surprise, but there might be some benefit in generating a bit of hype or something. So, right then...

Firstly, it's called 'Clarence's Big Chance'. It's a silly title for a silly game.

You play as an ugly 35-year-old virgin of a man who's unlucky in love, UNTIL NOW!! He's somehow managed to get himself a Date with a real live human girl, and he's very excited.

The point of the game is to run and jump around collecting items and such in order to impress this girl; there'd be multiple different endings depending on how well you performed.

The game would start with him waking up in the morning in his house, and you'd have to go through his 'morning routine' of getting dressed, having a shower, brushing his teeth, and so on. You'd do this by collecting Items from various rooms. The silliness of it comes from the fact that the game is a platformer, and a fairly large one too; his house is some ridiculous gauntlet of platforms and enemies waiting to kill him, which you have to pass in order to do these mundane, everyday tasks. It's something I find amusing, anyway.
It's optional how many of these Items you collect in the house; you can go out in your underwear for all it matters. However, the more you collect, the greater your score.

After this, you head out on the streets in order to Go To Work. You can collect coins throughout the game to use as currency later on.

Once you reach Work, you have to do various Tasks in order to impress your boss and get that promotion you've always dreamed of. You have a time limit. If you do all the available tasks, your boss may be impressed, and everyone knows that a girl would be more impressed by a higher position on the corporate ladder!! But do a poor job, and you could find yourself unemployed, which won't impress her much at all.

After work, you can roam the streets for a bit, and go into shops to buy gifts for the girl with the coins you've collected so far. This is optional, but it will greatly affect your outcome.
However, each shop sells three types of a certain item - say, Milk, Dark or White chocolate - and you can only buy one of each! The girl has preferences, and will Love one but Hate another. Her preferences are randomly generated at the start of the game, and you can find hints about aspects of her personality by locating laptops at various secret locations in each level.

You must finally head to a restaurant, and the pleasantries begin. You've got to converse with her, and choose the right choices; Advice you might have obtained from talking to people at work may give you an edge in the dialogue... but you might also upset her, again based on her preferences! You must order a meal - the more money you spend (if you have enough), the more pleased she'll be - and get through the night without messing up too badly...

And at the end of it all, she'll tell you how it went. Will she reject you? Is it True Love?! Will they get married?! It's up to you, I suppose!
Maybe you'd even Score Some Action, if you know what I mean.

That's the general idea of the game. I've done the house, streets, and half of the Work level now, so there's just the second half of that, the fourth level, and the date left to go. Shouldn't take too long; I've been taking approximately a week, or maybe two, on each level so far.
The sponsorship time's another matter, but I'll worry about it when I get there.

Here is a single screenshot for your viewing pleasure, to give you an idea of what the graphics are like:

Just a suggestion, but, could you possibly, even after the game has been developed so far, create a way to "play back" playthroghs you've played before, starting from a level that that you've done, with (at most) the tasks you have completed previously? For example, If you play through the game twice, with the first time leaving in nothing but your underwear (lvl 1), collect 2 pounds (or dollars), and get fired from your job, and in the other playthrough you leave in a fancy suit (or something else that similar, collect 500 pounds, and get promoted, would you be able to, from the main menu, call up a menu that let you start from the beginning of a level, with things that you've unlocked before; you can start on lvl 3, and from the start wear your underwear *or* set on your from the start wear your suit, and get a choice of starting with 0-50 pounds. Of course, if one starts from the beginning of lvl 4 then they will not receive the hints that they will obviously get from lvl 3. The concept is similar the one in the game How to Raise a Dragon[/u].

I know this is full of comma splices and is worded very badly, sorry.

but seriously, seriously, you have to like stalk this girl before you meet her (through co-workers and laptops(?! - creeper alert)), find out everything about her, (like all dating sims you'll no doubt have to write down everything you find out so you can refer back to it later (FUNNNN!!!!!!!!!) - couldn't you think of a more enjoyable way to do this part of the game?
just as a random idea off the top of my head, how about having hidden/hard-to-find items like a Cool Guy Suit or Shades or Cologne, and the amount of these hidden/hard-to-find items you collect influences the date? that way people who did "better" at the game would get a better ending, rather than just people who could be bothered to write stuff down. because there is NOTHING fun about having to write things down. also this way you wouldn't have to *play* through the date, because that part also sounded rather mundane...

i say all this because every other part of the game sounds REALLY good, and it would be terrible to have it let down by some lousy dating sim-esque mechanics.
the graphics look wonderful, the woman, Clarence and the dog featured in the screenshot all look GREAT, and from what you've described of the gameplay it does sound cool, and unique, so i hope for this game to be the best it can be

You are making assumptions here...
Interestingly, I've never played a dating sim, so I didn't know that they left you to memorise everything you learned. I was actually going to do that though, but thought of the general thing you're objecting about and so decided that instead, all of the information you accrue will be readable at any time from a menu thing that you can open at any time. Except during the date itself, so you might have to do some 'last minute revision' seconds before the start of the event.
That hopefully shouldn't be too much of a strain on the memory banks though...

Oh wow, THE FACES!

I laughed so hard! They're fantastic, I can't wait! We've got our work cut out for us; if I ended up on a date with that I might just give up on dating right then and there! (Maybe that's how he gets her?)

Interesting to see you stepping out of the serious realm and into some light-hearted material. It oddly reminds me of the early Leisure Suit Larry games from Sierra.

It looks and sounds interesting, that you have to turn an ugly 35 year old virgin into a nice looking gentlemen to impress a girl and hopefully get this guy "excuse my language" laid. I read the description and it pops out like most games and it real makes you want to play it. Also if it's not any good, I'm not saying that it won't I'm just saying, at least it'll be funny.

This game looks SO fun so far. It could be an awesome arcade games, such as Super Mario Bros. The only thing different, is that this guy looks better than Mario! I probably should not have said that....and that is my opinion, I still like mario though....Good Luck!
