Why, it's not Sunday today at all!1!1

I've been doing a lot more work on my as-of-yet-unnamed Pokemon clone of a game this week; progress is going quickly and it's rather satisfying.

I've come up with a plot and setting in detail, and it will be split into three different parts; Chapters, or whatever. They won't be very long; maybe two or three hours each, though trying to collect all the monsters or train the ones you've caught will probably extend the playtime.

I'm unsure how I'll release them... I might just go down the usual sponsorship route, or I might try to set up the Fig Coins stuff before releasing any of them and then I'd release the first as a demon and sell the other two... I'll probably try to do some work on the Fig Coins stuff soon and see how it works out.

I've planned 60 monsters for the first chapter, and maybe by the third there'd be about 100. Most of the 60 are evolved forms, since like Pokemon each monster can have one or three different stages. So you probably wouldn't be able to collect all 60 in the first chapter in the same way you 'can't' get your Charmander to become a Charizard outside Pallet Town (it's probably technically possible, but maddeningly tedious).
You'll be able to acquire every monster in chapter 3, though.

I've drawn sprites for only 12 monsters so far, but that only took like two days in total - six a day, when I actually worked on them - so it seems entirely realistic that I could do 60!

I might try to get back to working on the new version of the site this week, since I haven't touched that in a while.

Uh, I don't think I've anything else of importance to note... So I'll leave it at this for now, then!

Hee hee hee, I laughed enthusiastically when I read that you'd be releasing the first one as a "demon". Oh, humour.

That aside, I'm reasonably excited to see what kind of monsters you've come up with and how your battle system is going to work. (I'm also excited to apply for beta testing. Yay!)

Good luck with working, and hopefully it will be a repeat of CBC in that you can get it done really quickly and out there on the market! :)

Yay pokémon clone!

Although I haven't beaten white yet, I feel like this will be successful.

Sponsorship would be best IMO, due to the fact that I am too cheap to spend money on most flash games... and i know I'm not the only one. I have a feeling that because it IS a pokémon clone, many kids will enjoy it and more members will join.

I like how you ended the post with an "!"

A plot? I thought this was a pokemon clone.

It looks like you're keeping the game relatively small which is good, this way there's a quick release and you wont be using too many creature ideas up and instead use those ideas on Beast Signer (I liked the demo of Beast Signer more than any of the pokemon games) (and I know that you're planning on changing how Beast Signer would work (even though I loved how it was but I assume the changes are because you plan on using less beasts or because it's easier to do it the new way).

Anyway I look forward to your next game.

I'm curious about how you plan on doing the EV, IV, nature system. I think removing IVs is fine, but the other two are so much more controllable, and I feel the idea should stay. Beyond that, I also would like to know about how you plan to balance it, or if you plan on leaving it purely single player. I would really like a beta release if you would, or at least a posting of some of the inner mechanics, so I know what parts need to be done for the strongest creatures. I really like the idea of a flash pokemon though, and the Mardek series makes me think this is going to be epic. GOOD LUCK!!! Also, how do you usually beta test? I think with Mardek it would be necessary, but I've never seen anything about it.

The only way that I know what these 'EV' and 'IV' things that you are talking about are is because when I made Beast Signer, I read about Pokemon battle mechanics... I am not the sort of player who plays Pokemon to maximise or perfect such things like I know that some people do, and I'm not a competitive battler either (in fact, I rather dislike that 'min/maxing builds' technical approach since it seems to suck the soul from the games). These things will probably end up showing through in the game's design. There'll be no EVs or IVs because the stats' values are so small; instead, you'll increase stats manually when levelling up. I may be copying Pokemon in some general ways, but I'm not copying its details.

There probably won't be the option to battle other players for technical reasons; I've no idea how to code such a thing. It's unfortunate, but means less work for me anyway...

When the time comes, I'll choose some people to be beta testers and let them test a hidden version of the game.

sounds like a good idea (holding back curses about non-free chapters) for you to get some money (and some pokemon fans could become YOUR fans)
I will assume you meant you wanted to release the first chapter as a demo right?

Hmm. Only a hundred total? As DetroitLionsFan said, that seems a little small. Then again, it may also be that I'm fairly used to Pokemon and its 649 currently-known species. Now, I'm not saying for you to tack on an extra 550 creatures, but it would be nice for a few more options as to what we can play with.

Oh, and a question about that method of obtaining creatures that you said in a comment: If a creature were to evolve, would the evolution be available for cloning or would that machine or whatever only create basic creatures?

Consider that each sprite takes like half an hour to draw. That's fifty hours for 100 sprites, approximately. As a player, a number as 'small' as 100 may seem unsatisfying, but I am just one person. If the game did well, I could release sequels with more monsters.

I'm unsure how to handle cloning and evolved forms... It's likely that I'll just make them function sort of like Pokemon eggs, so that if you find a fully evolved form of something and obtain all of its essence, you'd end up cloning its most unevolved form at level 1 rather than a clone of the evolved form that you 'caught'.

You could always do another 'monster design contest' thing like when you did BS. Although you didn't really get all that many designs that you could use... just one was it? Can't remember O.o

Half an hour? Goodness, that must seem like forever. I had no idea that it took so long to draw a single monster sprite. In that case, 100 is probably a large amount. I mean, on the bright side, at least no one can complain that it's too hard to catch them all.

As for the cloning, I like that idea. It makes people have to actually work (gasp!) for their strong Pokemon-like creatures. Good luck with making this game. I'm looking forward to it.

Well, even though its a pokeclone, i would still like it because of that unique Pseudolonewolf storyline and would play it. So i'd encourage you to go for it. And i'm not pretty sure about the Figcoins idea. Its a quick way to make cash but then again, like someone previously mentioned, the 1st chapter would have to be exceptionally good to convince others to but figicoins sice there are many other free internet flash games to choose from.

P.S. I was also wondering whether you plan of going back to Alora Fane after this or will you approach something else. I was thinking that you may probably not approach Mardek 4 so soon because not only did you spend a large amount of time previously on the 3rd chapter but now its become way extensive. I was also wondering how you come up with the names for your characters, like Mardek or Clarence. I'm from asia, see, and i have heard these names for the 1st time. Are they common over your homeland? Did you make them up yourself? If you did, where did you get you inspiration from? A book or movie, perhaps?
