Pseudolonewolf`s Avatar Weekly Update Mon 25th Apr 2011 10:26am

Category: Weekly Updates

Late again! I'd have written this yesterday, but I spent the whole day just lying in bed due to feeling ill... I've had stomachish problems for like two weeks now; it could be an ulcer or something else, so I'm going to the doctor in a few days to see.
I also had an anxiety attack for no reason at all recently, and... well, all this interferes with my work, of course, and I've not really had the opportunity to look at all the comments that end up in my inbox or anything...

I have been doing quite a bit of work on my monster catching game though, regardless!
I've done most of the main engine stuff now, I think. Battles run from start to finish, you can encounter wild monsters, most moves work (though they don't have particle effects yet), you can get experience, monsters can level up and learn new moves or get stat boosts from it, you can encounter trainers who see you, walk up to you and battle against you with their own party of monsters, it's possible to store your monsters and rename them, I've done a Bestiary screen, an inventory, you can save and load your game, there are NPCs, area transitions...
There isn't a whole lot more to do before I can start work on the proper story parts of the game; I'm hoping to get to that point within about two weeks, then once I'm there, I'd hope to have the bulk of the work done in less than a month.

I'm including some more screenshots here for your viewing pleasure!

I mentioned the new site idea recently, but I'm going to postpone that for a while because another similar but different idea has come up that I won't talk about until I'm sure it's going to happen, so, uh... I'll not say any more about that for now.
At least it means I can devote my attention to this monster game thing fully... when I'm not feeling anxious about me health, that is.

I've been wondering for a while now whether to update this blog frequently, like more than once a day, with anything that's on my mind or which I've found which is interesting; not just site or game updates. I can see some people hating that, since they don't care to hear my rants against religion or anything like that, yet it may also start more discussions and give a reason to bring people here more often? It may also make you feel more involved in the development process, since I'd likely end up posting about specific details in ways I can't with these Weekly Updates.
I was going to wait until the new site before doing this, but since that won't be happening in the immediate future, I wonder whether I should just edit the blog system that exists currently... Hmm.
I'll think about it, anyway.
Before anyone suggests I just do that in forum posts instead, no, that'd be very different and not something I'd want to do. Apart from not getting seen nearly as clearly or having the same crowd-drawing factor as a 'site update', forum threads are designed to flow from one post to the next, while a news post would be different in that each comment would be a reply to the main post rather than the comment before it. Amongst other reasons.

So anyway, that's all for this week, I think!

I'm pleased that you got this far in your project in a matter of two weeks or so. You're getting pretty quick (or at least quicker), what with CBC and maybe this too!

I realize that this doesn't have much to do with your post, but I have a question: why haven't you added CBC to the site yet?

I like your new game, though.

Well, don't mind me for saying this, but the person you're playing, i.e. the protagonist, kinda looks like one of those psychic dudes in pokemon. My all-time favorites were psychic pokemon too. They were extreme and amazing. Much better than your every-day typical fire/water pokemons.

Interesting. I thought that this would be a lot more like Beast Signer... I guess that the lack of similarity helps you to separate Beast Signer and 'monster catching game'...

Although I would enjoy more blog updates, if you do so, please increase the number that you can go back in the see more section.

Your blog posts are a large part of your site's interactivity, do as many as you can while maintaining quality. Even small facebook-status-like updates would be good, and could generate a lot of comments - as your polls do. You could even do updates as you are making parts of the game, post pictures, etc., or get site-goers to vote on choices between small graphical elements of the game. This idea has a lot of potential.

Looks good, far more appealing than pokemon ever was for me.
