Pseudolonewolf`s Avatar Weekly Update Mon 9th May 2011 9:52am

Category: Weekly Updates

I don't know if I actually have anything to report other than that I'm doing the same as I have been for a few weeks now, which is working on this Miasmon game thing.

I've started on the plot stuff now; basically all of the engine features are done. But did I already say this last week? I can't remember!

I've spent much of the week though designing a title screen and trying to compose some music for the game. The Title Screen took longer than you might have expected since I'm a perfectionist about it, and it went through at least ten redesigns before I decided on one that I liked... I wonder how many other Flash developers do similar things.

I probably shouldn't be worrying about the music at this point in development, but I was looking forward to getting to compose it so I started anyway, since a game with music is more compelling for me to play and finish than a silent one. However, I seem to have a 'music block', or whatever you'd call it, and I've really been struggling to compose appropriate pieces... This isn't anything new, though; I've experienced this many times and it usually just goes away eventually or from repeated attempts I end up with something usable.

I should also mention that my girlfriend will be visiting in under two weeks, on the Sunday after the next one... We'll be staying somewhere for about six weeks and I don't know how much work I'll be able to get done on the game, or whether I'd be able to connect to the internet to do things like sponsorship, etc. I'll aim to have the game done by the end of those six weeks, which seems a reasonable target to me.

I was looking at the Games page the other day, at the list of the bottom which shows my intended order of projects (which I've changed around so very many times), and it's so *daunting*... Each one takes months, and there are so many! D:
I wish it were easier to stay motivated to finish one thing at a time...

Based on many comments on Clarence's Big Chance though - which got badges on Kongregate this week, yay - I could probably get away with making games much shorter than I usually try to do. I could have made that game a quarter of its length and it might have got *better* ratings than it has now, and would have been finished at least a month earlier...

So next, after the first part of this Miasmon thing, I'll try and make either BE-a-St or Raider or something, a simple platformer, and I'll make it short but still interesting, and... hmm, this is all assuming I'll still try doing sponsorship... I'd like to get that 'Fig Coins and Keys' thing set up soon; probably after Miasmon is released though.

What I want to do eventually is make two reusable engines, one for RPGs and one for Platformers. Then I could have a framework already set up for each new game, and that'd cut out at least a month of development for each one. I think I'll try and do that before starting on whatever I make after Miasmon... and hopefully it will drastically speed up my development if I do.

But now I'm rambling unnecessarily! So yes, work is going on as usual and I'm making good progress on Miasmon. Yes. Good.

I am new to the site, and as such I am unaware how I'm supposed to communicate an idea to Pseudolonewolf, So I guess Ill just do that here. I recently played Beast Singer, and really enjoyed it, like I enjoy all of your games, and realized that if you spent six, maybe seven hours fixing the known bugs (perhaps adding another mission to the Alpha) and load it on to Kongregate, I suspect that you gain more followers, more intrest, and quite possibly the fifteen hundred dollar weekly prize. Thank you for your time, I'm sorry if posted incorrectly.

Well, i hope you and Firequill have a great time. It'll kinda calm your psychological issues and you'll be healthier and will be uplifted and motivated to continue your game with renewed persistence and strength.
I like your compositions. They have a certain instigating, mystic charm that kinda reminds me of a harmonica, harp or violin, or something.
Oh, I LOVE how you 'ramble on' because it gives me some insight into your plan and thoughts, making it less formal, but more provokative and arousing.
I also wonder if Firequill should comment on your games here. It'd be a great new touch to the website, if you know what I mean.

Hi, I don't log on much, but I wanted to let you know that I've been following your blog and your games for a while now, probably since Mardek two came out. I thoroughly enjoy both, and I wanted to let you know. You say things like "I'm rambling" a lot, and I wanted to tell you that what you call rambling is a big part of what I like about your blog. I get an insight into the mind of my favorite developer once a week, and I like seeing the issues that you deal with as a artist and game creator. I also appreciate the fact that you don't tolerate ignorance and stupidity well. I have visited your forums a few times, read the rules, and realized that you have created something amazing. You have built a community that seeks to solve many of the problems of the internet. Obviously flawed in some ways, but you try. You admit to your opinions, and rather than bashing people with them, you openly ask for alternatives to them. Rather than just having ideals, you built a place where other people with similar ideals are welcome, and where people who are intolerant cannot survive.

I've been wanting to say that for a while. I have enjoyed every one of the games you make, and I am looking forward to this one. Thanks for being awesome.

Inspiration may come in consideration of your past success. Your compositions have been delightful to listen to in the past; I believe referencing them will be the best place to start. It's unnecessary for me to say such things, though.

Give those six weeks all you've got, Pseudo. In terms of rest and reprieve, that is.

Your obvious perfectionism is what drew me to your games in the first place. I doubt many Flash designers (outside of corporate ones) work quite as hard on the details as you do, and your games are better for it.

When they exist at all. Perfectionism has its downside as well. :P

Well I'm glad your making progress on your games. You always make great games regardless of the length I do however understand how impatient my generation is anymore and so therefore agree that making shorter games would increase their "ratings". I'm also glad that you are getting to see your girlfriend. I am happy for you , it would be selfish to be angry at you for not being able to work on your games while seeing your girlfriend , and understand that it is necessary. we all need social relationships it drives one to madness to be without them. as for the reusable engine idea that would be a rather good idea, seeing as how that would greatly reduce the creation time of the game for you would only have to do minor edits for each one then. Now this lat part i hate to say especially because you spend so much time on your music but I generally turn of the sound when playing games due to the fact that I have other music playing in the background. This Isn't meant to be critical but more to let you know that it doesn't have to be perfect if that helps your "music writers block" or your "composing block" or whatever it would be. However I now feel like I'm rambling so I'll end this post now with a keep up the good work.

I don't have much to say to this news other than that I want to congratulate your current progress on Miasmon. Right now, I love hearing that this game could be completed in two months.
Also, since you mentioned the title screen in the update, what is it like? Is the underlying theme trying to emulate an existing Pokemon game? Is it pixilated? Augh, so many questions!!!
Whatever, I'm also glad to hear that you'll be spending some time with Firequil. Everyone needs to take a break once in a while, and with some of your anxiety attacks that have happened recently, I think you'll enjoy some time with your girlfriend.

Good luck with the remaining work left to be done in Miasmon.

I just have one comment right now: You still need to put CBC on the site! There may be a reason why it isn't playable, or maybe you just forgot. Either way, it is in the completed games section, and it cannot be played. It is kinda annoying.

Otherwise, great!
