Category: Weekly Updates

It seems that the thing mentioned in the last news post was just a bit of a mixup; the 'GG Droid' developers did seem legitimate and said they'd contacted me asking for permission to use MARDEK, but I must not have seen their email amongst all the others I get and as such I never replied, then they must have assumed I *had* somewhere and used my game anyway.

It's sorted out now, though, and the 'GG Droid' people were nicely civil about it, so that's always good. I've given them permission to use MARDEK; as long as I *know* about it and they're not dodgy thieves or anything, I don't see any good reason why not to.
I said that I might try to make apps from the MARDEK games myself in order to make money someday, but I suppose that doing that would just be more effort and I might never end up doing it, so it isn't a good reason to prevent someone else making it available now. If it brings MARDEK to more people and perhaps brings more people to this site, then good!

Since it's Sunday, I'll also make this post into the Weekly Update thing and tell you what I've been doing with my time over the last few days.

I've been working on Miasmon, but progress seems slower than I'd like... I mean, I'm getting a lot of work done, but it just seems like there's more than I anticipated, or really 'simple' tasks end up taking several times longer than I thought they might.

I've mainly just been working on technical stuff this week... I've devised a way of making plot events that affect the whole game world rather easily, which I'd try and explain, but it's really dry and I don't know if I can really be bothered. It's something that I'll likely be able to reuse in other games though to make it much easier for me to add all the plot stuff. It feels like it'll speed up development in any projects that I use it in.

I still need to do a lot of art, too. There are many of the sprites for monsters left to do, and I still need to do all the sprites for trainers in battle. I don't know if I'll use some kind of template for trainers, where I basically just make them all have the same pose but edit features like clothing, or whether I should do what Pokemon did and have every trainer class in a different pose...

I'm not good at drawing people though and I never have been, but then again I'm not particularly skilled at drawing in general either... I mean, I can draw better than 'stick men', but compared to *real* artists like my girlfriend, I'm terrible. So I've been spending a lot of time recently drawing in a sketchbook in order to improve my skills, but it's a tedious, slow process. It takes years to become a good drawer, and I feel impatient about it because I'd like to develop my skills quickly in order to be able to use them for this game.

I've been drawing human bodies and faces (using tutorials and proper techniques; please don't give me advice on how to do this 'easier' as if I'm just been bumbling along in the dark or something), and they're a pain to get right, especially faces! Faces are perhaps one of the hardest things to draw because of how our minds perceive them; you might not notice too much if a drawing of, say, a dog had its eyes in slightly the wrong place, but if the eyes or nose or mouth or anything aren't exactly right in the drawing of a human face, it's really obvious and makes the result look really creepy.

Well, I say that, but it's obvious that we use a lot of stylised depictions of humans whenever they're drawn. Anime characters, for example, would look absolutely terrifying in real life, with those humongous eyes and tiny, tiny noses and mouths, and yet it seems that a lot of people can perceive them as *attractive* regardless of that when they're drawn.
Anime's trendy at the moment, and most young amateur artists who try to draw people would imitate the anime style, I'd bet. However, I'm not a fan of anime so I don't want to do that; I'd also prefer to have my own way of drawing people instead of just following the crowds or something. It's rather boring seeing anime characters *everywhere*...

I'm probably making things harder for myself though; anime characters are likely much easier to draw, or at least it's harder to get things horribly and creepily wrong when drawing an anime face... perhaps.

Anyway, I'd love to be better at drawing so then I could do 'Official Art' things of the monsters in Miasmon, sort of like the Official Art that each Pokemon has and which is shown on sites such as Bulbapedia in articles for each Pokemon, like this: [LINK]
I can do the sprites of the monsters for my game adequately, but drawing them in a non-pixelated way still seems to be a huge challenge... largely because it's been years since I last tried to draw anything that way.
It's a shame, since I'd like to do something like... doing a piece of 'Official Art' for a monster each day, which I'd upload to this site, so as to show off the monster designs and build up hype for the release of the game.
Perhaps my skills will improve to that level 'soon', but it seems unlikely. I might give it a try anyway, even if the results are crude.

I've also been struggling with composing lately... Sometimes music comes to me and composing is easy, other times, that's not so much the case.
I've been really struggling with Miasmon's soundtrack for some reason, even though I was originally excited about being able to compose it, and I still am. I suppose it's a difficult game to decide on a 'feel' for, music-wise; I have some ideas, but I still need to refine them or something. Hopefully I'll get out of this 'composing block' soon, and I feel like once I get started, the rest will be easy.

Firequill and I have been talking (again) about working together in future, and something may come of that. I won't say much though at this point just in case things don't work out; I'll talk more about it if we decide on anything for sure.
It'll be great if we DO work together though; the thought of disappointing eachother through inactivity might motivate us to work quicker and more often, and if she's doing the art, then it means that games could be made much, much quicker, since the art is something that I spend a lot of time on in my own games when I could be spending that time getting other stuff done.

I think that's it for now... Hopefully I can make significant progress on Miasmon this week! Yes! Hopefully!1

Hum... Pseudo, not that I doubt about how great you are at drawing, but you could ask for help on the site. I bet that are several people who draws relativelly well and are able to help you. Of course that it's a special technique of drawing, but I'm sure you could get some help. People around here are all your fans, and I think they'll be pleasured to help you with whatever you have problems. Though, it's just a suggestion.
Talking about Mardek now, there's so much characters, since I want to start the next chapter with advantage, I train all of them the maximum I can, and it is so exhausting, I don't want to see the skills menu screen for a while. You could take off one or another, just to make it more 'light'. I don't want to banish them from the series, but you could alternate them through the chapters. I bet that by ch. 4 or 5, Deugan and Emela will come back. So we do have Mardek, Deugan, Emela, Elwyen (unsure), Gloria, Meraeador, Legion, Solaar, Zach, Vehrn, Sslen'ck, Donovan, Sharla, with the possibility of some of the Saviour's join too. That's like two months learning skills and levelling up. And if the story continues as good as it is, it'll be 60+ play hours, that's huge, not mentioning that we might have Enki in the end. Well, it's just another suggestion, I enjoy Mardek series very much, and it may be only my problem, and whatever happens, I'll continue playing Mardek, since it's one of my favourite games ever. Continue doing this great job. I'm sure that in the future you'll be prized for your effort here. Congratulations for your work.

I think it would be awesome if there would be 60+ hours of gameplay, i hate short games!

So, mardek is gonna be an app. That's awesome. But I think tthey'll need to work out a few bugs. Not that there are many, Like sometime, I'm walking to the right and I just keep going until I hit a wall, then I am unable to move left or down yet somehow can still move up.

This comment will probably be neither constructive or meaningful, so you have my preemptive apologies. Pseudo, you games have become, hands down, my favorite to play. It started with mardek and has since escalated to being a general fan in all ways. I understand that the effort required to produce a quality game is nothing short of enormous and you thus have my complete respect in what you do. That being said, I believe a joint venture between you and Firequill would be a crowing achievement starting what would hopefully be a partnership of brilliance not only in game style and play but also in creativity and art showmanship. The best children's authors find an illustrator who can deliver the needed artwork for them. In that sense your venture is not all that much different. You are a creative juggernaut when it comes to producing high quality and enjoyable games. I know there may be both personal and professional obstacles to overcome if you were to team up with your girlfriend, but it would seem that such a match would take your games to an unprecedented level of amazing. I look forward to your future games regardless of if the pairing happens or not, but such a joint venture I believe would spark a whole new enjoyment both for the game play and possibly the work that goes into it.

as I read this, an idea formed in my head for trainer sprites(whatever you want to call them), and I would like to make a suggestion...

1. have all NPC trainers would have 10-20 'sprites' and use these NPC trainer sprites like in the pokemon games, giving them to certain classes of trainers based on their dialog and what monsters they use in battle

2. have 2 player sprites (1 for each gender) while making a clothes shop of some sort, wheras players can purchase the styles of clothes they want, with the possibility of small boosts, such as an exp boost, or small stat boost for monsters, or a walking speed boost for yourself.

leave any questions you have and ill try to answer them as best I can.

sorry about not clarifying, but hair style/color and skin tone would be selected at the start, while hair color/style would be changeable from the clothes store

As I thought the Game Page for Miasmon already made clear, you play as a set protagonist (an elderly male scientist with a distinct look) rather than a customised character, and I made his sprites ages ago. I've written about this at length over the last few months in news posts.

Trainers are already divided into distinct classes like in Pokemon, and I've already done their field sprites. The difficulty is in making their in-battle full-bodied sprites, and the difficulty doesn't come from how much I have to do (there are only a handful of classes), but how hard it is to draw any of them at all.

that completely slipped my mind, sorry, and thank you for your time.

P.S. some sort of free-play mode that isn't tied to a story at all?

P.S.S. possibility of a sequel?

7 years ago | (1) know, if I were you, I think I'd probably have the first chapter, maybe two, or Mardek for free on those things (and if you have people convert the games for you for free, all the better), but have a buyable version of the 3 and beyond maybe. As long as it's cheap! If it were a dollar, I'd probably buy it. If a million people buy it, that's a lot of dollars! Of course, if you have the same people converting it for you, instead of doing it yourself, then I'm sure they would want a share. But that could still be okay I think.

I'm curious how it plays though. I would like that I'm not so worried about losing my files (which is something I'd like to see improved upon in the future with your PC versions too, somehow or another). I would like the the portability. But, if the controls aren't adequate, it's a hasslesome game anyway (any game is without adequate controls). Yes, I think I've invented a new word.

All in all though, I think that could be a great opportunity for you. Play your cards right, it could make your games downright profitable!

I'm curious how much you do, or don't, work with others at all. I've loved your Mardek series thus far myself, and I've dabbled in some of your other games too (completed Clarence recently, nice game I suppose). However, you do seem to have trouble working on things, and working on the same thing long enough sometimes it seems. I wouldn't want to see your creative genius be destroyed because of that. And help would, well, help. Theoretically anyway. I'm not recommending myself by any means. I've not the skills that would help I don't think. But I'm sure people could help, even if you only want help with the actual programming. I get wanting creative freedom, certainly, and since you seem to do well with it, I wouldn't want to limit that in any way. But, perhaps a code monkey could be helpful to you?

Just some (hopefully) helpful suggestions. Take them with a grain of salt, of course.

I addressed why I don't work with others briefly in the FAQ: [LINK] (VERY briefly, it seems, now that I look at it; maybe I said more in the bio on my profile, but that's ridiculously long and perhaps off-putting...)

Basically I struggle greatly with social interactions, even online, and I'm making Flash games at all to avoid getting any other job where I'd have to interact with either customers, colleagues or an employer. So working with people I barely know on something as personal and important to me as my games is an idea that makes my skin crawl... Just contacting sponsors to get money for my games at the end of their development is an enormously taxing experience due to the small amount of social interaction involved, via emails.

However, I've been talking with my girlfriend about working with her in future because she's a great artist and the art is the bit I struggle most with; if I just had to do the writing, code and music, games would be done much faster and with her art, they'd look better, too. Though it's taking time to get anywhere with it since neither of us are used to working in groups. If we DO get used to it, I can see it cutting development time of future games in half and then some.

Perhaps she could also take over the public relations aspect that you seem to have trouble with. If that's possible it can be another plus point for a cooperation between you two. On the other hand, forced social interactions might be actually good for your personal development since you are facing the problem instead of working around it. So, erm, pretend I never said anything.

I know how you feel. Transcoding a 2000-line SFML program to Android Java is taking longer than I thought it would, too.

I think its great that Pseudo is looking to develop his own artistic style. I agree that people tend to draw using an anime style a lot and I think it would be great to show some diversity and originality by going against the crowd here. Having non-anime art will help not just your pictures to stand out, but also your games. Especially with so many, many people out their drawing that way.

BTW, if you need help with said official art (interesting you chose Sigilyph for your example...), we have a few pretty decent artists over here. (look for the threads with a golden Luvdisc under their rating specifically.) The best artists there tend to be REALLY good-and they're also Pokemon fans.

I suspect at least one would be willing to help if you asked them.

(the Battle Free for all thread is the exception-and that's because it's an art-based "forum game" involving drawing creative ways to defeat a previous Pokemon opponent.)

I don't really need *help* with the art; I'd much rather use it as an experience to practise my own skills, which I'd really like to improve anyway.
Besides, my girlfriend is an accomplished artist, so I'd rather ask her for assistance than strangers, no matter how experienced they may be...

Today I visited your site at deviantART. I know, it's outdated, but I looked at the art you did for MARDEK and was really impressed by the faces you drew for the main characters ([LINK] What a pity you didn't use them in the game! It would be great not to have every character looking the same exept for the hair and colour and stuff. I mean, you're talking about how bad you are at art all the time, but aren't you maybe under-estimating yourself? The faces you sketched there are so much more original, interesting and beautiful than any stylised drawings of humans I have ever seen. I would be happy to see more of your art in MIASMON :).
