Pseudolonewolf`s Avatar Weekly Update Sun 14th Aug 2011 9:17pm

Category: Weekly Updates

I'm taking a brief break from Miasmon for the moment, in order to work on the new version of this website that I talked about quite a while ago.

I didn't work on it immediately after talking about it because I ended up wondering whether to start a site together with my girlfriend, where we'd both be admins of equal status, both contributing to the design and features, rather than it just being My Site or Her Site. It seemed a good idea if we ever worked on games together, in order to reduce the work either of us would need to do and make it so that she wasn't just my lackey or something... but after talking about it for a while, I don't know if that's going to happen at all now, so I'll just progress with my own site for now.

As I mentioned in a news post a few weeks (or was it months?) ago, the site is being redone from scratch. You'll need to make new accounts and none of the history of this site will transfer over directly. I'll still keep this site around as an inactive archive that you can't post in.

There are several reasons for wanting to start afresh like this, and I won't go over them again here since I've already decided to do it and don't really want to seem like I'm trying to *convince* anyone...

But now is a great chance to suggest things that you wish were different about the site!

Are there things that you wish were here but aren't? Or things that seem useless and should be removed?

I'm not sure what to do about the rating system still. Perhaps I'll drastically simplify it, doing away with the orbs and replacing them with something different... I know I'll do away with the like/hate system on profiles (which is basically vestigial at this point anyway), and probably direct personal ratings, too... replacing them instead with Friends Lists, the ability to report people, and some feature I mentioned before where you can write (optionally) anonymous 'reviews' of members explaining how you feel about them.

Forum Posts will be removed, replaced with comments; forum threads will instead be 'discussions' where one person writes the first comment and other people reply to it like they would reply to any comment, choosing either to reply to the first post or to other posts individually. I like the idea of unifying things in this way, rather than coding two different sets of layouts and functions for posts in different places.

One of the main reasons I'm redoing the site is because I want to sell my games directly using the 'fig coins' and 'keys' systems that I've talked about in previous posts. I won't go into more detail about that here, but it'll be an integral part of the new community.

I may do away with Reviews; I'm not sure if they're worth keeping, since new ones hardly ever seem to appear. The existing ones will always exist in the archive, but it won't be possible to add new ones.

I'll use the blog section to write about more varied stuff, as I've said before, and it'll be much better organised to accommodate that.

The layout will be quite different; hopefully better.

Currently I've just been working on getting the general look of the site sorted out... Ugh, I struggled all night and most of today just trying to get the parts of the page to cooperate, since (this will only make sense to people who've worked with web design stuff) I'm trying to move away from the clunky tabled layouts that this version uses in favour of using divs, but it's been so frustrating how they lack basic features - like stretching the length of the page, or making equal-height columns beside eachother - so I had to experiment and read tons of stuff on Google just to make a really simple layout...
It's done now, at least, though I've yet to add any actual functionality. I've only been working on it for about a day or two though.

So anyway, if you have suggestions for things you'd like to see changed, now would be the best time to mention them!

I don't know how long it'll be before the new site becomes active. It's probably at least two weeks off, very likely much longer. I'll announce the unveiling a few days in advance though, and both sites will be active for a week or two while everyone moves to the new one, allowing you to copy stuff if you want to.

So yes! Suggestions?!

Don't know if you are still looking for ideas or even looking at this page but could it be possible to customize your own user page?
Right now we are able to choose the colors but I think it would be interesting if it was possible to rearrange the boxes so you can make a unique user page.
I saw other sites where this was possible, like the Belgium site Noxa, at that page were some preset combinations from which you could choose.
But I believe there were others where you could drag the box to the places you want it to be.
As an example: one person would have the personal info and the contact info on the left side and the three others at the right side with the Bio in between,
while another would have its Bio on top and the contact things under it.
I guess this will be a lot of work to make some preset pages and even more work if you let us rearrange the entire user page. But it still is just an idea.
Good luck with the work.

Someone might have already mentioned this, but could you add support for other file formats for avatars? Right now, I need to convert PNG's and JPEG's into GIF's in order to use them, and that makes the pictures much lower quality. Would it be possible to add support for PNG's, GIF's, Bitmaps, and TIFF's?

About the Impostor problem, would it be possible if you can devise an IP checker to see if the IP address matches. Say, if someone tries to impost me, and if his IP doesn't match with my 'old' account, then that IP would be banned?

Please accept my apologies for spamming with a lot of small comments on this blog post. A UI fix I would like to see is, if you're making a post/reply, actually have a quick reference of the formatting tags ( , [url] etc) near the box where you type your words. I know the formating guidelines is on the rules page, but it's easier to check it if its on the same page/don't have to open a new tab. It would make it easier for new users.

Actually, this is more of a side thing but I actually have some questions about reviews that I asked before. Luckily, they're less relevant now that chances are the reviews won't carry over, but I do still have those questions, and they remain unanswered and such.(To save time, I'll just quote the old comment where I asked the questions.)

david s said:
Is it possible that someone might sue over their games being reviewed?

Now, I know that seems unlikely, since as of now, if I'm not mistaken, all of the games are free internet games, however it seems like someone way attempt to sue if, say, spoilers were included or if the game was something that cost money. I mean, you might be doing them a favour by sending people their way, but still, there's an area to be cautious.

Another thing someone may sue for is libel. If someone feels that the reputation of their game has been tarnished by a review, I'm not sure, and I'm only asking, but might they not attempt to sue you for this? They could attempt to sue the reviewer, or the site administrator for such things, and I'd rather be sure that there is no risk then to see someone or some people getting sued over a simple game.

If someone pays for a game and reviews it, might there be some means that someone would try to sue?

Finally, I was wondering if copyrights protect the use of screenshots. If this is the case, a copyrighted game, as with the other scenarios here, might cause some... legal issues.

I'm not saying this to dissuade anyone from making reviews or anything, but I just want to make absolutely 100% sure that there is no risk of some ticked off lymey trot of a game maker coming here and trying to sue members, and possibly Pseudo himself.

Anyway, if anyone can produce answers to that, then I would appreciate them. If any of these things could result in someone being sued though, then perhaps it would be wise for Pseudo to scrap the review system, yes? That's why I figured it was relevant here, since he spoke of possibly getting rid of it.

Don't know if it is mentioned before but I like to see a place where we can see your previous "weekly updates" (or something like that).
I don't know if there is already a place like that (I'm sorry if there is one but I haven't found it yet) but it can be useful in times when some of the members are on vacation without Internet access,
and they like to see what you have written in their absence.
It isn't necessary to keep all your previous blogs, but if you do plan to keep them you can also refer a bit better to them instead of saying "in my previous posts" or something like that
You can give them numbers and say " like I explained in blog #15" for instance or you can add a link so you don't have to explain certain things more than once to members who missed a post.
Again if there already exists some kind of place on this or the new Fig Hunter site then don't mind my comment.
Don't force yourself in making something like this if it takes to much effort, I can understand that certain things are difficult when you're programming.
It's your site and you may do whatever you want with it, have fun creating it.
I hope to see the new site released. Good luck Pseudo.

Uh, my old posts are on the Blog page, accessible via the column on the right: [LINK]
They're poorly organised and uselessly titled, though. The new version of the blog will include many improvements.

Oh there it is.
Thanks for letting me know.
It appears I was looking in the wrong places (the forum pages that is), my bad.
Good luck with the new site

It might be useful if you could connect this website with Facebook or Twitter, so that we will not have to make another account and we will get updates there as well.

Earlier, Rating Orb A β Pseudolonewolf said that he didn't want this site to become Facebook. I think that linking it with OpenID would help make that happen because people from Facebook could join without going out if their way to create an account, so they would be more likely to. We don't want the "average" person on Facebook joining because they would be used to inane discussions and bad grammar, and it would make it hard to adjust to this site.

I would look forward to a lot of these changes that have been mentioned. I guess it's common knowledge know that comments should be editable and I think I saw somewhere you said that you would definitely put that in.
Something that I think would be quite good is if there was something that sent you a message or some kind of notification every time someone used your name with the whole "Rating Orb A β Pseudolonewolf" thing. That way we can see what other people are saying about us and we can make sure that if people who we want to see the post will.
I actually quite like the strict rules the site has in place. I can't stand poorly written messages or people who just sign up to troll. The strict rules mean that trolls are less successful and it generally filters out all the "stupid" (for need of a better word) people on the site.
I think the ratings system does need redoing and I agree with all the people who have suggested that a person's average rating is based off the average rating of their posts rather than having actual personal ratings. I also agree with the whole idea of "I like this" or "I strongly dislike this" or "I'm neutral" as well as having a way of assessing how well something was written.

I also feel that someone's chosen element should play a bigger role than it currently does. I seem to remember a while ago you mentioned something about putting a person's element in the background of their post or something like that which would be a nice touch.
Relating to that, I feel roleplaying should have a bigger role on the forums (pun intended). Obviously if it were to be included it would need a specific space, but it would be fun to have somewhere you can roleplay and socialise with people. Not just a forum subsection which would get a whole load of people angry, an actual section or something. I thought about it quite a lot but I don't want to put lots of ideas down now when it clearly says in the rules "No roleplaying". Or something like that anyway.

The only thing that I think I can say about the old site, other than that I'd really prefer that we keep it, is that if nothing else, it would be appreciated if there was still a way to read old PMs. I mean, I'm sure you've thought of that, but a lot of communication is done through PMs, and you cannot make those public, so there should be a way that members can access their old PMs. If this is impossible for some reason or another, it would be greatly appreciated if you could tell us that it would not be possible, so that way we can copy/paste what we need to save and whatnot.

I think I'll really miss this old site. I suppose that the new site is something to look forward to, but there are things I'll miss about this old site. I have a tendency to get... attached to things. In a way, a huge part of my life, and in turn, a part of me, is attached to this site. I have trouble letting things go, so seeing this site get locked will be a little tragic to me. I know it will still exist and all, but it's just... odd.

There was also the way the site used to be. I kick myself for not taking screenshots of the way it used to look long ago. Myes. Oh well, things change, I suppose, and I might as well get used to that!

I'm glad that the fig coins system will finally be put in place, and I do hope you've put a good deal of thought into how you plan on having that system work, though I'm sure you know what you're doing, and I know you know what you're doing better than I would in your shoes. :P Hopefully you will appoint some moderators in the new version of the site, since the site could really benefit from moderators.

This site change is probably for the best and all.

I recall you having said at some point that the whole comments/forum system would be fused into one system instead. If you do this, then I strongly urge you to make sure that they can be edited.(People have been asking for editable comments for quite some time, and I'm sure it would be rather beneficial to the overall site if you were to do this.) I hope you are still planning on keeping the community hub, but if you decide to get rid of it, that would be understandable.

Other than that, it would be nice if it was easier to access some of your art. It seems a little complicated to get to it now, and if someone comments on a piece of art, you need to first go to the art section, and then to the individual piece of art to find the comment.(Perhaps you could even add suggested Miasmon to the art section as well? That would be a good place to vote on them and such, methinks.)

Normally I'd be able to think of a myriad of suggestions, but my mind is drawing a blank. Ah well, I suppose it's for the best. It's not like any of my suggestions are all that great anyway.

I'm actually pretty surprised by the number of people here who want to keep the personal orb system. I'd much rather see it removed. On other communities I've been on, the social structure is naturally organized into friendship circles, so to speak. On Fig Hunter, maybe as a result of the orb system, there's more of an 'in-crowd,' and all the members fall somewhere at some distance from the center. I feel the orbs kind of mark us with an objective position in the hierarchy. It's like we're all wearing differently-sized headdresses or something (heheh, okay, silly image), and the cyans are the good citizens who are supposed to hang out together, and then the blues and then the browns--
