Category: The New Site

(Hmm, this version of the site feels so *clunky* and *old* to come back to after spending much of my time recently working on the new version...)

I've made 'most' of the new site now; it shouldn't take too long to be completely. Maybe 'a week or two' if we're lucky.

Instead of explaining my progress in paragraphs, instead I'm going to provide a list of what's done and what's still left to do, which I'll update in this next post as I go along. So here it is:

Stuff that's done

  • The basic layout

  • Accounts can be created; the Join page

  • Comments sections

  • Message centre

  • Blog; main page, separate pages, comment sections

  • Basic Userpage layout

  • Userpage: About tab

  • Userpage: Performance tab

  • Friends system

  • Userpage: Friends tab

  • Userpage: Comments tab

  • Most of the 'Edit Stats' page (now called Settings)

  • Viewing a person's comment history

  • UFELTA rating system

  • Basic members list

  • Colour schemes; some

  • Avatar uploading

  • Selecting things like hair or eye colour from lists

  • Adding things like Religion or Race via a textbox with 'autocomplete'

  • Support for customised font colours as part of the colour scheme

Stuff that still needs doing

  • Userpage: 'Blurbs' tab (these are the 'anonymous reviews' that I mentioned before)

  • Userpages: Medals tab

  • More colour schemes

  • Forum

  • Private Messages

  • Chatroom

  • Similar IP Page

  • Polls, which can be made by me or by other members for forum threads

  • Adding Interests (Likes, Dislikes) via the Settings Page

  • Userpage: Interests tab

  • Moderator functions

  • Userpage: Infractions

  • Temporary bans

  • 'Chatroom moderators'; temporary chat bans

  • Fig Coins (this will take some time to set up securely...)

  • Userpage: Personality tab (mostly done, but the 'stats' thing isn't yet)

  • Userpage: Keys

  • About page

  • FAQ

  • Games page(s)

  • Music page

  • Art page

  • Encyclopaedia; may not be necessary if there's the Wiki

  • I'm considering integrating those Facebook 'Like' or 'Share' widgets, to boost traffic

  • Searching/filtering for the members list

If there are any features that appear to be absent and which you feel I should add, feel free to point them out and I'll consider adding them to the list.

By my count that makes 26 down, 19 to go. Of those 19 maybe 7 could be added after the site goes up, and it seems like many, if not most, of the more time consuming upgrades are already done. I am awaiting egearly this new site's release, and the twitter feeds and slowly changing list just add to the excitment, and the speed at which these changes are happening and being relayed to us makes me feel as though we will be able to see the fruits of your labor very soon. Good job with all the progress, and good luck completing the rest of the site.

Great work!

It would be really nice to have RSS/email notification for things your watching. Several others agreed with me when I suggested this in chat.

Also, if you're going to do the Like buttons, don't forget Google+. One might imagine that, so far, there's more of the people who'd be likely to play your games there than on Facebook.

Just one tiny little thing comes to mind.
Maybe instead of Fig Coins, you could just use Figs, e.g. "This many Figs for the special Miasmon," but this sounds like you're bartering in an old marketplace or something.

I'm really interested about the Art page though. I intend to be more active there...

I've got a question. With the Fig Coin system, Couldn't people just go on Kongregate or any other site to Play the games for free instead of buying fig coins on here? Or do you already have that problem solved?

The games wouldn't BE on Kongregate and other sites. They'd only be here.

Though I believe he said the MARDEK series would remain free to attract people.

Taking a note from your bio, Pseudo. Would there be a built in section for writing descriptions of why you chose each value for your personality stats, or more important, will you carry the personality page over to the new site?

Could you add a element test (yes, I know Beast signer has one) on the userpage instead of picking an element? You could also add a temperament and/or a Alignment test. Just adding my two cents.

What about the sub-community-things that were suggested in the chat? If I remember correct, no definite conclusion was reached in that conversation... have you later decided against it, or are you perhaps waiting to make a poll or perhaps a blog post about it to see if it is worth doing? Or did you forget about it, since you obviously have quite a lot of other things to do with the new site in your mind?

For the people who don't know what I am referring to, a while ago we talked in the chat about the possibility of making it possible for members to create their own sub-communities (they could be called guilds or clubs or factions or whatever) about something they (and hopefully some other members) are interested in, like a Chess Club, for example. It would have a separate page with a comment section, in which only members of that sub-community could write comments in. Members could possibly also see whenever someone wrote a comment to a sub-community they are in through an system similiar to the current "messages"-thing (due to technical problems, it couldn't be made so that every comment written in the sub-communities comes to guild-members' standard comment inboxes).

A system like this could be quite interesting and make the community more engaging, perhaps increasing traffic a bit and making it slightly more appealing to new members. Additionally, it would allow people to have lighter, shorter discussion about subjects they are interested in but which might not interest a large portion of the site without cluttering the "currently active forum threads" -section (there probably will be one in the new site?) or having to use the chat and hope that someone who is also interested in the subject happens to be there. Sub-communities about single games could also offer people a good place to exchange contact information if the game can be played online and to discuss strategies and stuff. Also, should people want to discuss something that many passionately hate, having a separate corner to discuss it instead of talking about it in the chat might be better for everyone.

The system however has the downsides of it most likely taking some time to make, and since this community isn't that large, it might not see enough use to make it worthwhile to do it. And in addition, this site isn't exactly designed as a social board for people to discuss their favourite shows - it might steal some spotlight from the main purpose of the site. Pseudo also suggested that instead of users making communities, every Interest that you can choose in your profiles could have a comment section for it. This would be easier to implement and would also allow discussing your interests with others in a separate section meant for it. But I personally feel that it wouldn't have quite the same charm as making actual guilds.

Should Pseudo decide to add a system like that, there is still some room for elaboration on how exactly it would work. Should there be a guild leader of sorts who would have to accept new members, or would joining be completely free? Should comments written on sub-communities' comment sections appear in the Community Hub (I assume that there will be a page like that in the new site) or not? Should everyone be allowed to make guilds? Also, it would add nice flavour if there could be ranks in these communities, but that might be overdoing it a bit, especially since they wouldn't really fit in all kinds of communities. It would also be nice if a guild-avatar could be uploaded, which would be displayed in its page.

I don't know if this was already the plan or not, so ignore me is you have already thought of it.

I like this post, it gives the new site's completion a more empirical feel, that is I look at this page and almost can see one of those percentage bars you have at the bottom of your games in the games section. I think it might be nice if, instead of upateing us with specifics, you could just edit this post as you complete parts of your list. If you put a strikethrough on each feature as you completed it would give us a sense of watching the new site develop, and might even build excitement for our new community. If you wanted you could still add comments at the bottom or underneath each feature, explaining what it does, or how close you are to completing it, or any problems you need help with. Maybe it's just me, but I like the idea of being able to watch the site grow, even indirectly, it makes me very excited for the end result.

On a slightly different note, I want to address Fig Coins. I have never particularly liked pay-to-play communities or games. I understand (and can even sympathize with) your need for a larger, more reliable income, but I need to understand a few things first. First, and foremost I want to make sure the new site itself does not require regular (weekly, or monthly, or even yearly) payments to be a member of this new site, I like the community that has gravitated around you, they provide an excellent mix of intelligence and a desire to have fun, but having to pay to join the new site would force me out of this enjoyable community. Next I want to address the use of figcoins in your games, I have heard a lot of speculation about 'premium content,' but I cannot recall anything specific from you, the source, about how reliant your games will be on figcoins. Will they be used exclusively for premium content, will games now require a onetime activation fee, or will your games now require monthly contributions of figcoins if you want to keep playing. I am fine with the first option, and I can probably even work around the second, but the third is a dealbreaker for me. I am a college student, with precious little disposable income, and while I enjoy your games and look forward to the new releases, I cannot afford to be dishing out a monthly fee just to play an online flash game. Given infinite cash, I would not complain about this function, of course, given infinite cash I would probably be able to join many pay-to-play communities, donate you creds on kongregate, and probably even try to bribe you into letting be become a beta tester (*cough*takethehint*cough*). Also I am rather new to having a credit card, and I am not yet comfortable giving it out online, I know you SAY we can trust you, but look at it from my point of view: A large group followers gather, there are many here, from Paladins to Dark Knights, from Programmers to Wizards. In the background many peasants who were too lazy to set their profiles are lurking around, unnoticed. The Almighty-God-King appears in the form of a great dragon, "All Hail Yalort" cry his followers. "Now," says the dragon in a deep and mesmerizing voice "I need more money, give me you credit card information." Ok, maybe that is a bit much, but you see my point. I may have gotten a little off topic there towards the end, but my point remains the same: as much as I enjoy your games, I currently don't have the capability or inclination to pay for them on a regular basis. Perhaps when I graduate in a few years or find a surprisingly well paying job I will be able to afford such things as premium content, but until then I hope that I can continue playing your games without a monthly tribute.

I do look forward to the new site, and all of its improvments, I'd just like a little more information before I sign up.

I've been updating this post by removing items from the 'To Do' list and putting them on the 'done' list instead, but perhaps strikethroughs would make it more obvious.
Something I want to do on the new site though, *maybe*, is make public 'To Do List' things for my games, sort of like this, which I'd update as I went along so then people could watch my progress... Spoilers would be labelled vaguely. I don't know if I'll do that or not, but I might.

I have written a few posts about Fig Coins. They'd be easier to find if the blog had better category sorting (something I've addressed with the blog on the new site).

Joining the site would not cost money, nor would posting. I *may or may not* charge small numbers of fig coins for unnecessary luxuries like the ability to colour your posts; I'm not sure. These would be one-time fees.
When I release games, I'll release a short demo version here and to portals, and a full version which you'd need to use Fig Coins to buy a 'key' for. That full version could only be played here, and it'd be integrated into the site in such a way that pirating it would be difficult or impossible.
Buying the 'keys' would be a one-time fee, and the cost would be low; less than $5 per game seems likely (though games will be released in parts, each one requiring a separate key; Miasmon will be released in three parts, for example, Alora Fane might be about six). Once bought, the key would be visible on your userpage, and you'd need to be logged in to use it to play the game.
That's the main use for Fig Coins.

I'll likely handle money via a third-party shop site thing, like most sites do. That is, I'll use somewhere that seems secure so then the security won't be in my hands; you wouldn't be giving *me* credit card details (also note that you could use PayPal, probably), instead you'd just be entering them into some external shop thing which is designed specifically by experts for that kind of thing.

Yes, I'd assumed or heard assumptions equating to much of that, but it is very nice to have a specific nad direct answer, Thank-you. Most of these seem fine, like I said, I can work with one time payments, as long as I don't have to worry about a monthly fee.
