Category: Weekly Updates

Whoops! I forgot to write my weekly update this morning because I forgot what day it was! o_O
I've felt so 'rushed' or something since I released Raider and I've spent most of my time just maintaining that, checking comments and seeing if there are things that I need to tweak. I want to make the game as good as it can be, y'see, to maximise not just my rating on Kongregate, but also peoples' enjoyment of the game.
Actually though, my score on Kongregate is disappointingly poor... only 3.66/5 at the time of writing this.
It seems to be going up gradually, but it seems to have been hit hard by the initial flood of players, unfairly giving it scores of like 1/5 for trivial reasons like a lack of a mute button or 'poor controls' (which I've since fixed).
If you like Raider, it'd help me a lot if you could go to Kongregate and vote highly on the game, in order to boost my rating and increase the chance of the game getting badges or me winning a contest (which, at this point, I know is completely out of the question, but still). The link is here: [LINK]

Also, if you got here via Raider, then HELLO! Welcome to my website! I think I already said this in the last news article!

Raider currently is restricted to Kongregate for about a week... or it should be, anyway. Obviously some, well, IMMORAL sites think it's fine to just steal games at the first opportunity for their own sites, but really this isn't such a big concern since Flash games are made to be distributed like that.
I won't personally be making an effort to upload the game anywhere else until the week is up, but once it is, I'll likely upload it to places like Newgrounds, etc, which will perhaps bring more people here... I wonder how that'll turn out. Hmm.

Anyway, apart from Raider, I've been working on MARDEK 3 and Beast Signer! Hooray!

I'm actually keeping to that daily schedule that I mentioned last week, and it helps immensely because I don't have to sit around thinking "what should I work on today?!". Since I know exactly what to do with my time, I've been barely procrastinating at all and I've got loads done on MARDEK!
The schedule has the finishing time of MARDEK 3 at approximately mid-September, as I think I said before, but I wrote it in such a way that each day had only really simple tasks that I could DEFINITELY do, and there are a lot of days labelled 'catch-up time', just to make sure I didn't lag behind and ruin the whole thing. It seems to be working so well though that I've been moving all the tasks back (or would it be forward...?) since I've been doing things quicker than I thought... Last week, for example, I did three days' tasks on one day, and shifted the whole thing forward (or would it be back...?) by two days.
So I could be done BEFORE September, especially since I'm so excited to see MARDEK 3 finished!

I've been 'working on' Beast Signer, but I've got little done... What I've been doing is mainly redesigning the concept.
See, the old alpha is getting rather stale in my mind... It is built on the same engine as Deliverance, and for that reason, as you likely know, I'm redoing the engine. I've been putting this off for ages because the thought of just redoing the same game is unappealing to me; I did that a few times with Deliverance and it's one of the main reasons I'm so utterly sick of the game now.
So instead, I want to 'remake' the game in the process.
I'm redoing the engine ANYWAY, so don't think that this is just further delay or going off track because I can't stick with an idea or anything. But while doing this, I want to make the game BETTER, and sleeker, neater, easier to update and more fun to play. I want it to be something that I can really be proud of at my current level of skill, which the alpha currently isn't.

I've started a thread in the forum about the various changes I have in mind, so look at that if this is something that interests you. I really would like to hear as many suggestions as possible because I want to make the game as good as it can be and interesting and enjoyable for everyone who plays it, but please try to keep your suggestions, if any, reasonable and fair and consider whether or not they'd be feasible and easy enough for me to implement.
Many ideas, I notice, are the sort of things that 'sound cool' but are actually impractical (I got loads of these for MARDEK, like "u shud b abel 2 rid on ginat baest in batel!!" and other such things...)

Anyway, that's all for this week. I really feel that I'm FINALLY getting 'serious' about doing this Flash stuff professionally... Originally, it was just a hobby, but then I decided to make it my main focus, and the transition to actually getting to that point was a bumpy one and it took me a long time to find what works, or something. I feel now though that I've 'matured' and got into this schedule-based approach to work, which I can really see being successful and motivating to me...
So yes! Expect to see more from me soon!

Actually, the mute button needs to be able to mute SFX and music separately. Even if players don't hate music, they often have their own music already playing so they actually need a mute button or else everything sounds horrible to them.

Yeah, the thing about Kongregate is that it's VERY picky about what it likes. You have to include things you'd never personally use (especially the mute button; many people on Kong hate all music) and showing a game that's Nintendo Hard from the start is more likely to lose their attention (with a 1/5 rating) than stick around and keep playing.

Kong likes hard (especially if there's a badge), but they hate Nintendo Hard. Personally, I liked the old version of Raider better in terms of being able to pick it up and play without it being brutal on you for messing up.

I have a couple of raider related points:

The boss is boring, while being excruciatingly difficult. I got less satisfaction out of killing him due to the fact that I was steadily getting closer as my muscle memory improved. I was able to predict when I would beat him. I then moved on to medium and got my ass handed to me. I think you could do better in Raider 2 with the boss. You are on the right track making him really hard, but try to be a bit more original in HOW you make him that hard. The best boss battles I ever played are the ones where It feels like a level all on its own. Think BIG for the boss!

Also, I decided to play raider again today and I went to kongregate (I originally played from this site). I know there is nothing you can do about this, but the game is WAY choppier on kongregate than on this site. I think it is that menu thing that comes up beside the game. Anyway, I gave up because I was dying in stupid ways because the game was choppy and was throwing my timing off. I was doing little jumps instead of big ones etc. Just thought you should know. It may be a factor for some people and may skew your score a bit.

I think it deserves at least 4. It was a well thought out game with a lot of replayability. With the exception of the boss issue I just mentioned, I have no complaints. I enjoyed each of the "rooms" and am looking forward to raider 2. tell us when you put it on newgrounds, I want to vote for it and help get it on to the front page!

Pseudolonewolf: TOTALLY sorry if I made you feel pressured or anything like that. I didn't expect you to "make my game for me" and mentioned it as much for ideas that seemed up your alley and might inspire creativity as for you to potentially work on it.

I totally respect that the fun of your work comes from making your OWN ideas come to life and in that sense, it would be silly for you to work on someone else's ideas.

In case I ever do have time, would you mind sharing the tutorial where you learned flash? I would trust your suggestion more than a random flash tutorial.

Thanks.

Ahoy! Good news, indeed. Yes, don't forget Newgrounds when Kongregate's contract is over. Seems like your new schedule is full of win. Cheers!
