Pseudolonewolf`s Avatar Raider: Episode 2 Suggestions Thu 18th Jun 2009 10:36am

Category: Raider

I tried to work on MARDEK 3, but I wasn't getting anywhere. I've been working on it non-stop for the last few weeks, which probably has something to do with it, but also I'm at an irritating point in the story where I know *vaguely* what I need to do and make, but I need to actually plan out the specifics of it, and it's always these bits that slow me down and annoy me.
It's a lot easier to just continue with some tedious but straightforward task...

So I decided that instead of trying to force myself, I'll work on Raider: Episode 2, as my schedule tells me to anyway.

I got a lot of suggestions and complaints about Episode 1, but foolishly, I never made a list of them or anything.
So, in order to form a coherent list of what I should do differently this time around, and to have all suggestions in the same place for the sake of convenience, I am asking you here to tell me what you think I should add or remove or change for the next episode to make it more enjoyable!
Something as vague as 'change the difficulty' is worthless, by the way; be more specific, since difficulty is largely subjective.

Also, keep in mind that I've already made the maps for episodes 2 and 3, so things like 'change the jump physics' or 'add new abilities' won't be added in these two because the maps were specifically designed for the current physics and abilities.

The new Raider is way better, the old one was a fraction as good as the new one. You people just want inventory, combat and story (everything Mardek has, as well as most other RPGs). Although story is a welcome addition it's not actually nessesary and Seudolonewolf is probably going to introduce alot of brilliant story line anyway (not that he has to ofcourse). This a platformer not an RPG! Fighting enemies would defeat the overall goal of the level, get to the end without dieing. It would be so much easier to achieve the goal if we weren't so bent on destroying every enemy in sight, most enemies do not need to die and it is best to just jump past them. I don't see why anyone would suggest being able to kill the ghosts. The ghosts are invinsible for a reason, so that you can put on your platformer gear and quit your addiction to killing anything that shows up on a screen! Everyone would rather take the easy option and slash a sword a few times to kill a hardly defended enemy. It is really annoying me seeing everyone asking for more enemy killing in a platformer! And why would I need to stop and sort though a list of items in my inventory when the only stats are health and lifes!?
Anyway rant over, the only thing that I would say needs improving is the boss. And maybe the amount of RPG fans trying to play Platformers!

Oh, yeah, I forgot: It'd be cool if the game saves info about certain things in between episodes (in particular trophies) and then you use that information in a later / the last episode to reward the player in another way than "just a good rank". I think something like a trophy room was suggested.

First of all: I think it's worth going through the Newgrounds and Kongregate comments sections again. Even if it takes like one hour or so, you'll probably find many good minor issues/requests you can deal with for the second episode.

Now, as for what I remember from the comments and think should be improved in Raider Episode 2:
- Renaming of difficulties (trivial, but effective)
- Statistics feature (stats after each run and overall stats with the purpose of adding another incentive to replay and improve)
- Death animation
- somehow improve the save game / check points issue
- avoid combination of inescapable pits with spikes (I believe you said you solved this with lava)

I agree with "Some Guy", if there was some plot in the middle too it would be more interesting to follow and play through. So if you're reading this I suggest doing what he said.

"You should make it so that if the player loses all of his lives he doesnt need to start all over again but he loses all his points."
Well, can't you just play on easy mode so that you have infinite lives? When I wanted just to finish it, I played on easy and everything was OK. ;)

About this:
"Liam I think psuedo has already answered as to why there isent a save.
The game is really short so it doesent need one."
Quotation from Pseudo's comment about saving game:
"I am wondering whether to add a Save Game thing, yet I think this might interrupt those who wish to do speed runs AND it would make your errors mean less if you could simply reset if you lost too many lives... Hmm."
I think "I am wondering" means "I'm not sure, maybe yes, maybe no". Now I'm looking forward to Pseudo's comment/Weelky Update, because it seems that discussion is getting pointless (I don't think that somebody write something revealing about saving game). So let Pseudo say something about it.

Oh, by the way, Half Life 2 can be finished within about 2 hours (if I remember well). Does it mean that it doesn't need many save points (or saving at any time)? ^^'
