This is my, uh, 'weekly update' thing... Days late. Tsk.

I seem to be in a bit of a rut. I knew it'd happen eventually since it always DOES, but I've fallen out of my scheduled progress for a variety of 'Realife'-related reasons... Annoying.
I've done bugger all in the last few days except play SPORE, but I'm using it as an attempt to motivate myself more in general...

Y'see, the Spore Adventure Editor is an interesting thing, because it allows you to make your own 'Adventure' things but with SEVERE limitations compared to what I can do in Flash, in terms of possible events, numbers of events per Adventure, amount of dialogue, etc.
I'm sort of trying to challenge myself by trying to make a new Adventure each day, to get into a sort of mind where I 'JUST DO IT' rather than putting things off. It's also a good way of coming up with new ideas for plots and monsters, coming up with the best ways to make a story flow (or something), and making dialogue succinct but telling a story anyway. It might help change the long rambly format of the dialogue in MARDEK to something more manageable.

Since I'm talking about it, I might as well mention that my Spore account is [Pseudolonewolf] (I always call myself that...)
For those of you that have Spore and its expansion things, maybe you'll get some mild, possibly tedious form of enjoyment from my maladroit and amateur attempts at Adventures... There's six or so at the moment, and as I said, I'm doing one a day.

It is disappointing for myself to know that I've achieved little progress on my games recently... but I hope to be out of this state soon. Some lifestyle changes are in order, which I've been starting to make today and I'll try to continue to do so throughout the week...

I keep putting off progress on MARDEK 3 because I get to bits where I can't think of exactly the right thing to happen next, so it just blocks my progress for days... What I'm trying to do as a change - which I'm doing in my Spore Adventures for practice - is to simply 'skip it' and move on, coming back to it later. I imagine this would make me far more motivated... But, uh, this is just rambling to myself more than anything. Yes, I seem to use this as a way of talking to myself to some extent. o_O

Raider 2 is still awaiting sponsorship... It could take a while. There are some things related to that that I need to sort out... Hmm.
Once it IS released though, I'll try to get the third episode done and up for sponsorship as soon as possible, so then it could be released as soon as possible.

Hmm... I seem to have had a lot of miserifying thoughts recently about friendship and loneliness in the last few days, which are largely responsible for my rut (or a result of? I can't tell), but mentioning such things here any less vaguely than this might be... disastrous... so, uh, oooooo~! Mysteeeerious~!
Or something. o_O

So, uh... I'll try to get back on track this week... Here's hoping I do.

Bah, I'm such a disappointment all the time, I know, I know... D:

Pseudo, if you're planning to add in a degree of premium content, I'd suggest that you only add in aesthetic items, or such. Remember, many people here are in fact teenagers who are either jobless or would prefer spending their money on more "professional" products.

But remember, the sword cuts both ways; if you start charging for your games, its players will be far more willing to find faults with your games, as although they may complain if the game is free, they'll have parted with (most likely) hard-earned money for it, and they'll be most unhappy if they feel they haven't received their money's worth.

So, please, think carefully about what you'll charge for, if you do indeed plan to start charging fees.

Ah, please don't do this.
I love you, and I'm not ashamed to say that, but think of all the flash game makers who *don't* charge for their games, and they're still happy with their work. There are other ways of making money for games. Totally sell out and advertise loads of stuff on your site, for example.
Also, think about this; you don't have that many fans as it is, and this move will only hinder the number you have. If fans were cash, you'd be a peasant, and this move could push you over the brink into homelessness.

Actually you could already charge for the Beast Signer alpha. A few weeks ago I stumbled upon a pretty cool flash game on urbanprophet.com, which sadly is still in development. But you can try out the alpha for free for a certain time-period. I got hooked immediatly even though the game is quite buggy and paid the 9$ to get full access to the alpha. When the game is finished it's supposed to cost 15$, but all players of the alpha will get the update to the full version for free, so it kinda made me feel that I "made a good deal". Since then I've been wondering why you don't do sth. similar with Beast Signer. Urb, the developer over at urbanprophet.com, made a comment that he felt a lot more motivated seeing that so many people were willing to pay proper money for his games.

Hmm.. that WAS an interesting article.

I think you're producing games that could make viable Nintendo DS or PSP games, which sell for $20~$30 USD. Granted, since it's a Flash game, there's this weird baggage that will prevent anyone from being willing to pay that same price. Thankfully, developers don't see the full $30 anyway.Normally retailers and publishers take a nice hearty bite out of it, leaving them with, say, $3~$5 if they're lucky. I think $15 would be a fair price for a full game, but if you're planning premium content then you might be looking at $5, because I don't know how willing most people are to pay for what might be less than half the game (premium sounds like extra stuff, not the meat of the game).

While this would be even more time consuming for you, what's popular is to take, say, some likable character in the game who everyone wants to play as, and offer a full story (recycling monsters and game mechanics, yay!) parallel to the original game. If you plan for something like that I think a lot of people who enjoyed MARDEK would be interested in shelling out money for it.

I'm having trouble thinking of something that seems worthy of payment, given that the main game is free... since you ARE releasing MARDEK 3 in episodes, if I recall correctly, perhaps you could offer "pre-order" of the next episode, in which the people who pre-order get access to site-locked content? Getting to play a sequel earlier sounds like a pretty good incentive, especially if you piled on some added features.

So.. I think that if you packaged it WITH premium content, for purchase, and strategically placed it after a very touching/inspiring moment, a lot of people would think $5 would be a great price to play the next part early, and perhaps $10 would be reasonable. Maybe it starts at $10 and falls as you near the official "free" date?

I think you produce games that are roughly worth $20~$30 dollars, when compared to what's available on the market. If you were making DS games instead of Flash games, that would put you in that price range. The

That is a very interesting article!
It REALLY makes me want to make at LEAST one of my games have premium content though.

I am afraid, people, that probably FHO will have an editor that you have to buy (it will be very cheap), and Beast Signer would perhaps have content that could only be unlocked by paying for it.

Otherwise, should I starve because people can't give away $10 to me for my months upon months of gruelling effort?

(The idea of selling MARDEK 3 for $10 comes to mind, but I wonder how that'd turn out?! o_O)

A lot of us have these sort of times. Take some time to chill, or whatever can pick yourself up. I'm sure most of us have something. Do whatever you need to do. I'm sure (most) of us can wait and all of that.

Oh, and for all you Spore players, have fun. I am a unfortunate soul who doesn't own the game due to spending money on another game last week. (Picked up Fallout 3, but I was thinking of Spore too. Too many good games out there. >_<)

Sorry it should say "because you TOOK this time." Not sure how that happened. It just says "to."

And for the next Raider (this inspiration came from your suggestion of Knytt), I think more strategy would improve the game's rating in the future. I don't know what the second looks like, but more "need to use the gun," "need to use the sword," "need to use that short jump," situations would make the game more fun in my eyes. One or two extra options would be nice, but I think it is good to have limits to what your character can do, rather than try hundreds of things until something happens (you picked the one the programmer liked).
