Pseudolonewolf`s Avatar Weekly Update Sun 6th Dec 2009 3:34pm

Category: Weekly Updates

MARDEK 3 is almost done now. I've been working almost non-stop on it all day for the last day or two or three, and getting a lot done, but there's still a lot left to do. Mainly little things... but lots of them.
I'm on schedule so far, so if I keep going at this rate, I'll be asking for beta testers in two or three weeks, and they'll hopefully be testing before the start of January. It'll be good to avoid Christmas with the RELEASE, but I'm wondering how devoted beta testers would be able to be if they were enjoying Christmas presents instead... hmm.

Anyway, some people mentioned some things on the last news article relating to how I should handle these weeks before release in order to get the most profit out of all my many months of work...
I'm really clueless when it comes to things like this, and I'm likely to just end up taking a poor offer for the sake of just having it RELEASED, and I wouldn't do any other extra stuff of my own accord because I wouldn't know what to do...

So, uh, what should I do? I am looking for 'advice' on the matter, BUT only if you actually know what you're talking about; I'm not asking every member to come up with some suggestions off the top of their head, because I can do that and it's not all that useful to hear others doing it.
Instead, I want to hear from people with knowledge and experience on the matter, if possible...

I do want to make quite a bit of money from MARDEK 3, since I've worked on it for so bloody long!

That's that, then! It's rather exciting to have it so close to being finished...
But then I bet when I release it, there'll be crippling bugs relating to Flash Player or something, or people will just say 'LAG' and rate it 0/5, since it's very complex for an AS2 Flash game and is likely to run quite slowly on old computers! (Oh how I wish I'd coded it in AS3!)

IMPORTANT NOTE: I am not looking for beta testers until I explicitly say that I am, so, uh, don't volunteer yourselves yet because you'd be wasting your time.

i think that you should wait 2-3 weeks after christmas to release the beta, but for alot of fans, not even christmas could stop them from the helping with the beta

Yes, I am aware of that... It was extremely useful to me when releasing Raider for sponsorship, and I understand most of what it explains now from experience.
It's a shame that it didn't exist when I released MARDEK 2...

sometimes at night when I cant sleep I make up long epic 'what if I could make a flash game' ideas and 'how I would market them' well here's one of my fav marketing ideas: put it onto kongregate (dont forget the ads) then put somthing such as: pay 5 kreds for ad-free gameplay, and then 10kreds for bonus lvls ect, like nobody uses those mochi-coins anyways! and add somthing like 'play this on kong and get (insert bonus object)!' or just make it exculsive for more ad revinue.

As far as I am aware, the kreds system works completely detached from any Flash games. There would be absolutely no way to detect whether or not someone was giving kreds via the website from a Flash game; there's no communication between the two possible.
The reason that MochiCoins, etc, were made was to do that sort of thing. I'll be most likely using one of those if I can; actual fans of the game may well JOIN MochiCoins (or whatever service I use) to acquire bonus features, especially if they play the game repeatedly in future; they'd think 'hey, here's something I've never done in the game despite playing it multiple times...'

If you want to make money off this game you could submit it around the time where Kongregate gives out prizes to the top three games. And if you have done a good job as you said you have you probably could take the prize money easily.

Okay, so I know that this doesn't relate to the weekly update above, but:
-- I Thin would be a good Idea for people to be able to comment on your little 'recent progress' updates, but maybe only have a limited number per update, say, 25, just to minimize slowdown to the site.
-- Also, I was wondering if you are going to 'archive' the current list of 'recent updates' anytime soon, as having updates for games that already came out (Mardek 3) would be confusing to a new person on the site, and the lengthiness of the current list is starting to get ridiculous. (I mean, I don't think anyone cares about updates you made four months ago)

I was considering having comment sections for each of them, but it didn't really seem worth it so I decided not to...

100 entries are shown for that thing. When there are more than 100, only the most recent 100 will be shown. I could change it to all posts in the last three months or something, but for some reason I'd prefer to see how long it's taken to do 100 things or something...

For some reason, I would like them to become archived after you reach 100... It seems stupid, but it would be interesting to look back and see the rate of progress.

I can understand not wanting a separate comment section for EACH update, but maybe have one comment section for the entire recent progress bar? Although, essentially it could just be commented on the most recent Weekly Update...

Have you considered micro-transactions, such as mochi-coins?
People complain about them, but they make decent money (often they make a lot more than the ad revenue and other revenue from the game generates.) If you keep them small in price and absolutely, positively make sure that the normal game does not seem lacking to those who do not purchase them. Make sure that those who don't purchase anything still have a complete experience.
Some general micro-transaction thoughts:
-A bonus dungeon with some quests
-Cheat modes
-Weapons/armor
-Percentage modifiers (+exp %, +gold %, better chance of better loot drops, + crit damage)
-etc
Something to consider. An RPG is perfect for this.

Yes! I've been strongly considering this.
When I released Raider a while ago, all three of the microtransaction group things contacted me personally to ask whether I would include their system in my game. My sponsor and I decided it wasn't worth it with a rubbishy game like Raider, but they would certainly be good in MARDEK 3, very much so.
I'd likely just have an in-game shop that sells special items, like items with good properties, or unique things like an 'EXP plus', 'Gold plus', etc...

Do you have any experience with them? It's likely that all three would contact me again, but I have absolutely no idea which one to choose.

I would ask them how many people have accounts on their service (and how many people have actually made a purchase.) They should provide you with that data.
My guess would probably be the Mochi one, but I don't know the actual numbers.
I think it also just depends on your personal preference for the APIs they use. But I still would probably choose the one with the most users.

Something that I would definitely pay for in Mardek 3 would be something like an extra Cambria Tournament(or a set of them), or the like. I assume this wouldn't take very long to program because all you have to do is make some extra monsters (lots of them could be palette swaps, saving a ton of time animating). Also, you mentioned earlier selling some of your MARDEK music for money, and with this game you could easily sell all the music in the game in a pack (with maybe higher quality sound, or something like that) for a small fee.

I would like to beta, even on Christmas break (maybe even during Christmas, depending where I'm at because some places doesn't have good internet connections, and if that's the case I might start a day or two late). I have loads of free time. While I want Mardek to be out soon, you need more money from it than you get already. Maybe try having several sponsors? Or can you not do that?

can someone verify for me that the polls on the side are created on this site and aren't ads that will give me viruses? after being around my mom too long I paranoid of anything that might have a virus/involve a download.

I write the polls myself and there's absolutely no way in which you could get a 'virus' from anything like that, or even from adverts in general unless you're already on a seedy website and have no antivirus program installed...

You must have a VERY wide monitor for that to happen... It's just the background repeating; most people would only see one sun.

How wide IS your monitor? And the reason the MARDEK 3 thing wouldn't continue over is because it was pasted onto the background... Seen here:[LINK]
