Category: Weekly Updates
I meant to write this yesterday but forgot, I suppose!
Unfortunately, I've not got a lot of work done in the last few days... I was going really WELL for a week or two, getting loads done, but maybe I go through cycles of doing a lot, then doing nothing?
Though the main reason I've not done much recently is because I've been messing around with my sleeping times!
I was going to bed at ludicrous times and waking up at equally ludicrous times - sleeping at 7am and waking at 3pm - and I hated it and wanted to get out of it, SO I did so by just staying up all night one night and sleeping at hopefully 10pm the next night. I didn't last past 5pm though, and, uh, since then (it was two days ago... or three? Four?) my sleeping has been relatively erratic and it's affected my productivity a lot. Hopefully I'll be properly readjusted in a day or two though.
I've also come across another 'wall', of sorts.
I'm working on a secret dungeon, and have been for the last week (maybe more), which I was originally just going to use some generic Dungeon piece of music for. But I decided that it would be far more appealing if I composed some Secret Dungeon music, since one of the main appeals about new areas in games to me is the background music. If I find some fancy-looking secret dungeon but it just has a generic music track that was used in multiple other places, I'd find it dull, or something.
But I've been attempting to compose such a piece without satisfactory success! I've actually FINISHED two possible pieces, but neither give the right sort of MOOD, and I'm picky about it.
I'm also trying to compose a Secret Boss piece of music for the same reason; I'd consider a secret boss FAR more worth finding if it had its own music! Or rather, the 'secret boss battle' music rather than just 'boss battle' (which would be used for every secret boss in every chapter, including Chapter 2's Zombie Dragon).
But I've been having even LESS success with that and don't even know where to start; I lack inspiration...
I want to get both finished before making the boss of the dungeon, but at least I've finished the rest of the dungeon.
There's little left to do though:
[✓] There's the Secret Dungeon music...
[✓] ...and Secret Boss Battle.
[✓] I need to finish that boss, which means drawing and animating the battle model and probably giving it unique attacks...
[✓] I'll need to make the tileset of the SECOND secret dungeon!
[ ] Then the areas...
[ ] And the boss of that, too.
[ ] Then there's that huge chunk of writing that I needed to do earlier but DIDN'T, and went on to doing this other stuff instead...
[ ] Then another sort of short boss battle thing somewhere which I haven't done yet...
[ ] There are probably a load of other minor things, but they're trivial in comparison and I could probably work on them during beta testing.
So yes! Nearly there now! I'll tick these boxes here off if I get any of these done this week.
February is still a possible FINISH date, but I've no idea how long testing and sponsorship will take. (I'll probably work on another game during those...)
In the last news post, I mentioned games that I intended to work on this year, but they weren't exactly in chronological order. I like making lists, and feel the need to write a list here of the order in which I am planning to do things:
- First, I'll finish MARDEK 3, obviously... I keep having desires to work on other stuff, but I prevent myself from doing so because I really NEED to just focus on this. It's so close to being done now!
- Then, I think I may finish Raider 3, 4 and 5. I don't know whether I'd release them all soon after, but it'd be good to have them done anyway. I don't have a whole lot of motivation to finish the series, but I really SHOULD and I might get stuff out of it, and it won't be especially hard, I hope...
Maybe I can get all three done in a month? Or two? Hmm...
- I'll then start on the Figimon.
I'd estimate it'll take a couple of weeks if I focus on it, so it'll likely take three months!!!1
- Then I'll maybe consider doing Chimaera, the simple version, since it'll be relatively low on complex features and will get me accustomed to ActionScript 3.
I would try to set myself a strict timetable so then I could finish it in a month, or two at most, and I'd work on my next project WHILE it was being sponsored. If I want to do this professionally, I need to do things like that.
- BE-a-St will follow, which will hopefully also be relatively simple.
Again, I'll try to get it done in a month, or two at most, gradually trying to structure my work more like a job. Any features that I WANT to add but which will slow development just won't be added.
- I'll try that simple RPG at this point, in three chapters... I might make all three at once but release them separately...?
It'll be shortish, story-wise, rather than huge like MARDEK, and its battles will most likely be bland and unoriginal. It'll mainly be made just to get used to making RPGs in AS3.
This one may take longer than Chimaera and BE-a-St, BUT I'd also want to use it as a test of discipline, to see if I could force myself to make short games which weren't overly complex...
- Once I'm used to that, I'll get started on FHO, which I'll try to get up and running quickly, but I won't rush it since it'll be an important part of the site.
- When I finish that, I suppose I'll get to Beast Signer...
I don't know where MARDEK 4 would end up coming on this list. I might just work on it in the background when I lack inspiration for other games? Or maybe I could do it after BE-a-St? We'll see; it depends a lot on how long other stuff takes and how strong my motivation is to make it. I might even start it directly after finishing MARDEK 3, then find it so easy to work on that I'll get it done quickly afterwards... o_O
Uh... Now I should get back to trying to compose stuff though... There's already more music than is sensible in MARDEK 3 - FAR more than any other Flash game, surely - but I still keep adding more! Which is getting concerning since each one boosts the filesize quite a bit, but, uh... it does add appeal? Maybe?
I'll probably end up removing some of the unnecessary tracks before release ANYWAY...
