Pseudolonewolf`s Avatar Weekly Update Sun 10th Jan 2010 10:47pm

Category: Weekly Updates

Well, all I really have to report this week is that MARDEK 3 is getting tantalisingly close to being finished!
Though I've not done quite as much as I'd hoped this week, I've still done a lot. I'm about a day behind on my timetable of tasks that I've made, but I can hopefully catch up (I was three days behind yesterday, but caught up to being only one day behind, and I barely did anything today because I was feeling terrible and it's Sunday so I took ONE day off, at least).
If I keep on schedule, the game should maybe be finished by the end of January and February is when beta testing starts.

And on the topic of beta testing, please do not ask to be a tester until I write an article specifically about that, because it's rather annoying, especially if I know absolutely nothing about you and as such have absolutely no reason to trust you or know you'd be a good tester.

I wrote a To Do List thing in the last Weekly Update of all the stuff that needed doing, and, as you can see, I only ticked about half of the things off. This is largely because the others were ALL of the remaining stuff that needs doing rather than just what I intended to do this week, and some were really huge things.

This week, I intend to make the monsters and boss for the secret dungeon I'm making (this may take some time, since I can't settle on a final design for the boss or some types of enemies appropriate for the dungeon (no, I do not want suggestions or advice), and I hate animating battle models), to write the dialogue that I was putting off for ages (I may feel more motivated since it's basically the only thing left to do), and, uh... Well, just those things, actually.

Then, after they're done, I'll need to add two minor sidequests, draw the appearances for some weapons, write some of the 'Dreamstone' text scenario things, then I'll need to test the game and make minor tweaks along the way, and then testing will begin! I'll likely ASK for beta testers before I begin testing myself, then start the public testing after my own test. I don't know when this will be. Two weeks away? Three? Four? Something like that, unless something terrible happens.

I am getting tired (and really COLD) now though, so I'll leave this for now and, uh, maybe go to sleep! My sleeping patterns have been changed, but now I seem to be getting really tired at 6pm, going to sleep before 11pm and waking up at 6am. Hmm.

So, uh... yes. Hopefully next week I'll have something more exciting to report!

Actually, AN EDIT to make this more interesting... a question:
Do you care about these Weekly Updates? Why? (Or 'why not?' as well, I suppose...)

Good, Mardek is one percent closer to completion! And it seems that the off-putting dialogue section is completed, and was also not that bad. Pseudo, remember that the next time something is so off putting, it might end up being more enjoyable than expected! Or not, but possibly! I wonder what;s left besides testing/sponsorship

Why yes, I do care about the weekly updates, It reassures me that you didn't die from a heartattack or something, cause there was a time before the updates you were just gone...No sign that you were online, no updates, no nothing...

Granted maybe you don't need to do as many, it's not like were gonna suffer cause we don't get updates from our little game making slave. That's my view on that.

Well, first of all, congratulations on being ahead of schedule. That's nice to hear you got rid off your biggest obstacle so far. I guess there's the bonus stuff that's left to do now(secret dungeons, boss, optional quests, tournament, dream stones, weapons...), and hopefully they won't present much difficulty.
So we'll probably get to see the concrete progress on tomorrow's update. And speaking about updates, these have become largely the reason I visit, seeing as I don't have much time to post in the forums and such, and I honestly appreciate them a lot along with the development blog, as they give us more than enough details about how work is going. You also share your daily life experience with us, which is much more interesting than what you perceive as some boring daily activity.
Just one question though:How fast a gamer are you? If you're going to test the game yourself, how much time do you think it might take to thoroughly examine it?
Otherwise, good job on the progress! And good luck with the rest of the work.

Actually, I do care about the weekly updates. The reason is that I know the important things happening each week and I have motivation to come to this site every week. It is also fun reading the updates and it's exciting to read that you are getting closer to finishing Mardek.

That is all. Keep writing the weekly updates!

I'll just go ahead and what everyone else has been saying. I think that the weekly updates are extremely beneficial to the site. I also think its awesome that you are occasionally late with them. The weekly updates keeps your website visited on a daily basis which is awesome for any of the advertising sponsors on the homepage. Quick question here, do you get paid for every page hit or by each hit the advert receives?

Without the weekly updates must of us would just assume that you are doing nothing, which defiantly is not the case. I don't believe that anyone who frequents this site is irritated or underwhelmed by the weekly updates at all.

Another question that is sponsor related: Do you lose sponsorship money for showing screenshots before release? I ask because it would be awesome if you could add a monster skin or Mardek using a skill as a screenshot but I wouldn't recommend it if it'll lower your prospective sponsorship earnings.

Good luck with that chunk of writing that needs doing. If push comes to shove just write a general script and then edited and embellish it after you've finished. Its how I write.

Well, the reason sponsors give money to authors at all is because they hope to make at least that much in return, through ads or premium content or whatever on their site. If Pseudo site locks Mardek to Kongregate (to take a random example) that means that more people will be attracted to Kongregate to play Mardek, meaning increased revenue to K from ads, and perhaps even new frequenters of K (meaning even more revenue in the long term). Even if Pseudo merely implements an ad for Kongregate ("Sponsored by Kongregate" or whatever) this will mean that some people will most likely go to Kongregate looking for more games of similar quality. All of which is worth something to Kongregate, and worth more the better or more hyped the game is, so they'll want to pay Pseudo in advance, or give him a bigger cut of the royalties, for his game if he makes a deal like that. And etc. for Newgrounds and other Flash sites, or for a different game.

So unless the game was entirely about the graphics, or the screenshot gave away something important, or whatever -- if, in brief, fewer people would want to actually play the game after seeing the screenshot -- I doubt it'd hurt the sponsorship money at all. If anything, a lot of hype before the release would actually make it more valuable, because people would be excited and want to play it.

(I know, that was more than you ever wanted to know about sponsorships, but it's pretty interesting anyway! Economics, etc.)

its alright, i found it quite insightful. I understand what you mean with a screenshot causing more hype and increasing the sponsors revenue. Thank you for such a detailed explanation.

I have a great appreciation for hearing about your progress through your weekly updates. It gives me something to look at on the computer that includes similarities. I don't want to make any suggestions, because I fear that they will be considered unnecessary by you and the others on this site. I really think that you have unique ideas for online gaming, and I like going on this site since it hasn't been blocked from my school's wi-fi yet.

I see the Weekly Updates as a great way to keep yourself motivated to work; having to report to *someone,* be it merely a swarm of anonymous people who you will never meet in real life, probably, is still more motivating than trying to just force yourself to work. I would be more interested in hearing details, of course, that weren't personal but probably could help me understand your workflow; there may be some practices of yours I could employ to help me with my hobbyist programming, and perhaps some self-management techniques I learned in the office you might want to hear about.

Admittedly, "it's close!!!!!11" is probably not as interesting as you could make it. Maybe some irrelevant things (it's a blog-like thing, after all) that could draw more people to the site would be good to include?

Yes, just like everyone else who posted here, I like these weekly updates. Though, since you came out with the development blog, they seem to have less content.

I think you should keep writing them, but perhaps it would be a good idea to ask on a poll if you should keep doing?

Anyhow, the problem is that the people who don't care for them, wouldn't have read this, and as a result, would not be voicing their opinion on it. These people don't know what they're missing out on if you ask me, but I really like these updates. I like the because with the development blog, you just generically state that something was done, not what you plan to do, what your schedule is, or even how you did something. Weekly updates do all that.
