I meant to write a news post specifically mentioning when I was going away, but I didn't for some reason...
Anyway, now I am currently in a rented house with my dear girlfriend rather than at home alone, which is, uh, exciting and stuff!
I have access to a computer and the internet, obviously, but the internet connection is like... dial-up, or worse, and that makes it difficult to upload things like MARDEK 3 versions for the beta testers...
I'm still getting settled in to this complete change of lifestyle, but I'll likely get a lot done on MARDEK 3 and Raider in the next few weeks... even though the thought of working on either is just tedious and tiring at the moment, largely due to just general tiredness also from a change in my lifestyle and stuff.
Anyway, I hope to get MARDEK 3 done soon, and have still been reading the feedback from testers, even if I've not been responding or anything.
I've been playing a lot of platformers and thinking about Raider recently since it feels like a nice break from working on MARDEK *constantly*, and some of the feedback that people have been giving on that last news article was helpful too. Some of it was annoying though, because it's so much easier to say things from the perspective of a player than it is to add them as the developer... I mean, it's easy enough to suggest I add some various details for the sake of interest or add loads of different enemy types, etc, but I'm just one person trying to handle *every* aspect of the game alone so focusing on things like details and enemies isn't a good use of my limited time...
Still, the small number of enemies is something I seem to want to do something about... though it's difficult to come up with enemies that are easy to make and pose the exact right amount of challenge. Note that the difficulty isn't coming up with what the enemy LOOKS like or anything - that's trivial - but thinking of what AI it can have, HOW it should be an obstacle, etc...
I haven't really put much time into specifically thinking about such things though, so I may do that.
Something else I also want to mention is that, uh... well, people have been making comments and suggestions and so on about the Raider version that I linked to from the other news post thing, but it seems that a lot of people are making really *obvious* 'suggestions' just because I uploaded an unfinished version, either complaining about the lack of certain features or suggesting that I add them, features which are so 'obvious', like saving, etc, which I will 'obviously' add eventually but, uh... the version I uploaded is FAR FROM FINISHED so don't assume it's what the final version would be like. Yes. That...
Another thing is that there were suggestions of a sort from people about how I could make the game 'better' and so on which were too picky or something, and it sounded like the people giving them don't even like platformers ANYWAY *or* like certain platformers, have played few or no others, then dislike that mine isn't like the few or only one(s) that they've played... Like someone who's only played Mario then complains that Raider isn't like Mario, or something. Hmm.
If you don't much like platformers ANYWAY, then there's no real point suggesting things.
Oh! But here's something else that I remembered I was going to ask!
The influence for Raider is NES and SNES platformers that I used to play in my younger days and which I now play often with emulators, NOT things like 3D platformers, modern independent platformers, or Flash games.
BUT it seems that many people who play my games have much of their gaming experience from playing other Flash games, and that seems to affect peoples' expectations and impressions and so on.
What I want to ask is... can you think of any Flash platformers that you particularly liked, and link to them? I've played very few of them and probably only briefly then, so playing others for the sake of research would surely be useful to me.
It would also help if you could comment about what you do and don't like about the games you link to rather than merely linking to them.
Also remember that I am a one man development 'team', Raider is a SHORT project, and I am not trying to make the best platformer ever made. I'm just trying to make a game that might give some people a moderate amount of entertainment for a short while, as a way of distracting myself from my, uh, more WANTED projects...
Uh... I feel like I can't focus and that I'm rambling, so I'll stop typing now, I think. I'll probably try to write more on Sunday, maybe?
