I personally have no issue with the killing of insects; if of course I could see them suffer, then I might change my mind (although it's unlikely). In my eyes, while murder is a grievous crime, I don't feel that there is anything wrong with killing per se; I acknowledge that it's wrong to kill a kangaroo or echidna, but I have no issue with someone going out and shooting a fox, rabbit or feral cat. (This is an Australian perspective; those animals are pests here).

I do, however, have a problem with people mistreating their pets. This is more to do with the inherent responsibility that comes with ownership of a lesser creature. (I base my assertion around the basis that we feed the animal - therefore we = superior)

Incidentally, a computer isn't alive, so it can't be killed.

Rating Orb Jakers, Lawful Good Philosopher – joined 7 years ago War; what is it good for? Really, who wants it?203.129.XXX.XXX6 years ago
The title is a bit facetious, I know. (it's part of the lyrics to a song I've been listening to) But this recent poll, and people's responses to it, intrigue me. While I personally would object to war, being a student of politics, I can see how it may be desirable, even necessary, in certain circumstances. For example, defensive war, or war to protect the oppressed.

However, that's not what I'm interested in. I can't really conceive of any logical reason why one would prosecute an offensive war, and I noticed that several people have commented on the poll saying that they'd certainly involve themselves in combat. What reasons are there that one would consider such a self-destructive (and destructive to others) act as necessary, or even desirable?

Rating Orb Jakers, Lawful Good Philosopher – joined 7 years ago What religion would you WANT to be true?203.129.XXX.XXX7 years ago
To be honest (and quite trite), I would like MY religion to be true (Roman Catholicism), for the simple reason that it is mine. However, I don't think that any religion really suits us as a race. I think a perfect religion would be one where you experience things. That is, I think that ours is the perfect existence. Without an actual sensory perception of how these 'heavens' exist, I think that I would prefer having my current existence than some undefined 'other'. I like the idea of 'lives' where you can do 'whatever'. Just so you have the experience. I wnat to do everything, just so that I can say that I've lived; that I've tried it.

And maybe, when I have done everything, I'll be satisfied.

I also like Owner2105's perception (reincarnation), but I don't think that I would like to be an animal; a being without sentience, something that cannot 'think for the sake of thinking'.
