Ahem. I am officially closing this poll. The results are in, and I have decided on the winner. Yay!

Results:

Option 1: Change. 1/8
Option 2: Stability 7/8
Option 3: Neither. 0/8

The winner is.... Rating Orb raventhefree! *claps*
Her post me struck me as well thought-out, interesting, and persuasive. I liked the fact that she addressed reasons for disliking change and refuted them, and I appreciate the hard work she did for this post. The other two posts, by Rating Orb silence and Rating Orb Seiryuu, both seemed very similar to me, expressing essentially the same sentiments (which I suppose shouldn't be surprising, given they picked the same option...). I do appreciate the concise nature of their posts, but I felt a little more, uh, elaboration wouldn't have been out of place. I thought the posts were, in a way, too concise, because they weren't thorough enough to convince me of their position. That's all I have for my "critiquing". Thank you to all who participated.

raven may start the next poll.

Yay! I won! It was so difficult, too! The competition was fierce, ya know. I'm honestly surprised that I managed to pull this off. Just goes to show that I am totally the best writer out dere. Y'all know it.

---

But, uh, the actual poll. Right. I deliberated over this for a long time, kind of. It's a question of profound significance.

Ahem: Is the Hokey Pokey really what it's all about? O_o

Wait, no that's not it. This is the real thing, I suppose.

Generally, do you prefer a greater amount of change or stability in your life?

Answer 1: Change! It's exciting! 0/7

Answer 2: Stability! It's comforting! 7/7

Answer 3: Neither. I hate both. 0/7

There is also an invisible Answer 4, which Rating Orb Tripledot has voted for.
---
That's about it, so, uh, please comment and vote! If you want you can PM me your vote or something, they are acceptable as votes, you just can't enter the writing contest. And don't rate this, I suppose, since it's only meant to announce the next poll and doing so is against the poll rules!!!!1!

*glances around nervously*

Ahem. I'll take NĂºmero Dos, please.

Although I, being still tender in years and lacking in experience, have never held a full-time job, and will not hold one for several years (I hope), I thought it best to go with option two of this poll. If I had to choose, I would prefer a career involving more intellectual challenges than physical or social ones. I'm not certain this will come as a surprise to anyone on this site, given those who populate it (for the sake of this exercise, I shall assume everyone on Fig Hunter to be highly intelligent, no matter how erroneous such an assumption is). But, whether or not this site's members are shocked and awed doesn't really matter to me; it seems more important to explain my reasons for picking that option than to forecast my audience's reaction.

What it Boils Down To: Compatibility.
I believe that, ideally, a person's character should fit the job they hold. Or, if that's too broad a thing to assume, that people should perform the jobs that interest them. Now, I realize this is essentially impossible (for many reasons that I shan't go into right now), but since this is a hypothetical poll, I hope you'll excuse my dreams. In my opinion, I am best suited for a job involving a greater amount of intellectual challenges than social or physical ones. Now, please, don't take this as me trying to impress upon you all that I am some deeply intellectual person who simply lives to have my vast mind challenged. Instead, I am just trying to explain that, out of those three options, the second would probably be the best one for me.

Now, in order to persuade you (you being any reader on the Web) why I would pick that option, perhaps it'd work best if I explained why I would not pick the other options. I'll start with the third option (of course!): a job containing more social challenges than physical or intellectual ones.

When I enter the social "sphere", I'm not helpless. I can make conversation (hard as that is to believe), and, on occasion, even inject a witticism into the conversation if it's getting too dull. Well, I try to at least. The point is: I can hold my own in a social setting. But, despite that, it never feels quite comfortable. Even when the conversation is flowing and the jokes are funny and the topics are interesting, I always feel slightly... uncomfortable. It's not a painful feeling, instead it's vaguely unpleasant; perhaps irritating would describe it. When invited to social events, I don't shy away, but I enter unwilling. Given that reaction, I can't imagine making a career out of overcoming social challenges. Perhaps it would better me as a person, "make me stronger" or something like that, but I prefer to play to my strengths, and the game of life isn't one to be taken lightly. I only have one opportunity to make the most of my life, and I don't intend to spend the majority of my adult life in perpetual discomfort.

But... what about the first option? A career filled with physical challenges? This option is even less appealing to me than the third one; physicality has never been my strong suit. I am not an athlete, I am not physically fit, and I've only ever taken a passing interest in matters involving physical strength or agility. True, I'm not obese, or even overweight, but I will hardly ever be found in the weight room, slogging out hours attempting to build up my biceps. Although I do enjoy watching certain sports, I've always found observing to be far superior to participating in terms of relaxation and entertainment. Perhaps I'll miss out on an adrenaline rush or two, and my body may not thank me for it in thirty years or so, but today I am fairly determined to stay out of physical endeavors. Spending life hauling weights or running up and down a gym floor strikes me as a sorry waste of life, and, as I hope I've managed to communicate in this post, I do not intend to waste my life.

I don't want you to leave this post thinking that I saw all options as bad and merely picked the least painful one. In truth, the second one automatically appealed to me. But, until I had thought over the other two and realized how unappealing they were, I'm not sure I realized the extent to which I'd prefer such a career. Since my childhood, I've spent years pursuing various intellectual pursuits (giving up more often than I would like), and I've always thrived in the classroom despite my failures outside it. I hope to continue thriving throughout my life, even as the winter days overtake me and my bones grow frail and brittle. I don't want to spend my life vaguely unsettled, convinced that I could have done something better had I just taken a different path, picked a better career. I want to live out my life knowing that I took the best option available, that I chose as well as anyone can, and that that choice was the right one for me. At this point in time, I firmly believe, and hope to continue believing, that the second choice is the one I will always take.

Now, I realize that, as part of writing this post, I'm meant to persuade others to choose my side. But... how can I do that, when I see this poll to be so much about preference and compatibility, rather than choosing an option inherently better than the others? True, in my case it is the optimal choice, it is inherently better... but I can't say the same for others, I can't say the same for you. I chose the second option because that option is the one I feel I'd succeed at, it's the one I think I could do my best at, and it's a choice I think I could be happy with for the majority of my life. But, I don't know what preferences you have, and I would not want to make the terrible mistake of assuming that you share my strengths and weaknesses. I do not intend to speak for all; my voice is only loud enough for one. This post isn't meant to persuade the general public that option two is, and always will be, the best for everyone. I only intend for it to persuade the general public that option two is the best for me.

I'm not sure if black posts are actually that hard to make out. I post in the color black regularly, and read those who do the same, but, to my knowledge, I've never had a problem reading it. Unless they're using a color code to change the text's look, like this,, there really shouldn't be that big of a problem with reading it. Of course, if you still find it difficult to read, you can always highlight the post using a handy-dandy computer mouse--that usually helps me.

Although I can't speak for Rating Orb A β Pseudolonewolf, I doubt anything will be done about this soon. Given the amount of projects he plans, stuff like updating the site or adding on more posting options are relatively low on his to-do list, perhaps so low that it'll be months before he gets to it. So, unless adding on "aether color posts" is a project that only takes a few minutes or an hour, I doubt we'll see anything on it in the near future. Still, one can hope.

Rating Orb Zaknafein, Neutral Good Mediator – joined 7 years ago Am I Prominent?140.247.XXX.XXX6 years ago
I POST HERE. ROAR.

With my primal greeting aside, I suppose I'll write something... and I suppose I'll rank everyone who's posted so far an a scale of 1 to 11, with 1 being unknown and 11 being Rating Orb A β Pseudolonewolf.

First off: Rating Orb Sam G. You used to be prominent, I believe. It was before I came here, but I occasionally come across old posts of your's and realize that you've been fairly well-known in the past. That said, you haven't been very active lately in the past couple of months, and you've largely fallen off the radar on this site, I think. Still, given your past and the fact that I'm sure some of the older members know you, I'd say you're probably at 4/11 nowadays. Perhaps 3/11.

Rating Orb Havakazoo: I can't say I really know much about you. I've been here three-quarters of a year, but I've rarely seen you outside of chat and even in chat you seem to visit einfrequently. Again, perhaps that's because you were more active in the past. Like Sam G, you, too, have largely become a part of the background. I do not say this with ill-will; it is merely an observation. Approximately 3.5/11.

Rating Orb Seridel: Given that you haven't visited in four months, I can't honestly say that you're prominent in the least. You were once, but no longer. I did, however, come across your last post, and I did manage to rate it. Also, considering that you, too, are an older member, I'd have to assign you nearly similar ratings to Rating Orb Havakazoo and Rating Orb Sam G. 3/11.

Rating Orb hlbeta: Another older member, meeting the same fate as the others. I understand that you were once well-known, but I also understand that you no longer are. I'm sure the older members remember you, but their numbers grow fewer with each passing week. Again, 3/11.

Rating Orb MyNameisNobody: Bucking the trend, you, sir, are an old member that I actually know. You've been active for about three years, gaining renown, and you still visit here and post, along with chatting. Definitely a rather prominent member. 7/11.

Rating Orb ! rs111: If you aren't prominent, I don't know who is. You post so much your activity level was "Spammer" for a while. Despite your relatively long hiatus about a month back, your strong re-entry into the community of Fig Hunter confirms your prominence. 9.5/11.

Rating Orb david s: You were here when I first joined, you're still here, and you've only gained in prominence since then. Although in these past couple weeks you seem to be posting mildly less than usual (meaning: 70 posts instead of 100), you're still going strong. However, your prominence may be strengthened by a certain degree of infamy, as evidenced by your large number of hates and red orbs. Regardless, you seem to have left that era far behind, and, although you aren't as chatty as some members, I'm certain most members here know your name, whether they like it or not. 9.25/11.

And, last but not least, Rating Orb Ares: You've been here a while, still active, and I've seen you on the forum and chat occasionally. While you're not as prolific a poster as some (*looks at david and rsy*), I think it's fair to say that you're relatively known to those who have been here for a while. 6/11

Let me see... although this thread is probably somewhat inane, I suppose it's mostly harmless, so I'll partake in this thingamobobber. Here goes...

Rating Orb SSJZach, your avatar is what I call impressive. Points in its favor include the animation, the flashy lightning, and the way the name changes color from yellow to green. However, having stared at your avatar for almost a minute, the animation is starting to wear on me, and even though it's high quality, I can't help but be vaguely annoyed by the constant movement of your avatar. Still, that's probably just me, so I'd say you deserve a 9 out of 10, factoring in my slight irritation to account for the non-perfect score. Wonderful work.

This time, I will not be ninja'd! I hope...

Anyways. The actual wish...

The djinn grins wickedly, and presents you with one, normal-sized, perfectly good, without anything wrong Aero chocolate bar. You gaze suspiciously at it, but hesitantly take it, peeling off the wrapper. You bite into it, savoring the rich taste, and quickly gulping down half of it. You frown: the djinn is still present. He waits, an expectant sneer on his shifty face. After asking why he hasn't disappeared dramatically yet, he responds that he wants to "enjoy the show". About to ask what he means, you suddenly double over, sharp daggers of pain penetrating your stomach. The pains grow only more intense, and your breath comes out in short gasps, while your face, screwed up in agony, changes to outrage at this flagrant betrayal. As you begin to lose focus on your surroundings, the djinn's smug face fading away, you manage to gasp out a single word, a plaintive question: "P-p-poison?" The last sound you hear before the grave closes in on you is the djinn's gleeful reply: "No, allergies."

Yes, the djinn not only gave you a chocolate bar, he also gave you a lethal allergic reaction to accompany your consumption of said bar. That's terrible, I know, but what did you expect?

As for my wish, I wish that... er... someone... no. I wish that I had the ability to remember anything I wished to, and forget whatever I wanted to whenever I wanted to, only to be able to remember that thing again, even if I didn't know what I wanted to remember until after I had already remembered it.

Dammit, ninja'ed by Kobiwan. Here's my edited reply.

Right, this was my original post in response to Supergnash's wish:
Rating Orb Supergnash wakes up early one morning, then stumbles to his computer for his daily dose of Fig Hunter. Logging in, he notices something strangely... different. At last he realizes the change: the tiny orb next to his username is now pure green. Rubbing his eyes, Rating Orb Supergnash quickly visits his userpage, and gazes in pure awe. Not only has every previous rating become a green one, he has received a rating from each and every active member, making him officially the most popular user of all time. Best of all, his idol Rating Orb A β Pseudolonewolf has promoted him to co-Administrator, granting him near-omnipotence over the site. It's a dream come true... sort of. Unfortunately, Rating Orb A β Pseudolonewolf, having just noticed this strange development, is convinced the site has been hacked, and shuts down the site, robbing Rating Orb Supergnash of any enjoyment in his newfound power. When the site is finally put up again, Rating Orb A β Pseudolonewolf reveals the source of the hacking: Rating Orb Supergnash. Yes, Pseudo's pissed, and he quickly IP bans Rating Orb Supergnash from the site: fo'ever. Deciding that's not enough, the Almighty God-King proceeds to erase any evidence of the user's existence, resulting in Rating Orb Supergnash showing up as a simple {INVALID USER}. It's official: Fig Hunter has never had a Supergnash, and never will. Even the greens are gone, along with all other evidence. The dream has ended.

And this is my response to Rating Orb Kobiwan97's wish:
The jinn gazes incredulously at Kobiwan, amazed that a person would bother to make such a wish. He shrugs, snaps "Wish Granted," and vanishes with finger-snap. Kobiwan looks around: nothing's changed. Not a bit. Everything is exactly the same as it was, save for the fact that Kobiwan no longer has a wish at his disposable. True, nothing bad has happened, but, then again, nothing good has either. Realizing his mistake, Kobiwan spends the rest of his life in shock, unable to believe that he had a chance at anything and everything, and he chose nothing. Kobiwan dies alone, having wasted the best years of life wondering what could have been, and yearning for a second chance. It never comes. And so, Kobiwan dies, his wish wasted, yet most certainly not twisted.

Anyway, uh, I wish that... hmmm... uh... I knew what to wish for! No, that's not it. How about... erm... I wish for... a world with infinite resources/populated by friendly life forms/easily accessible to mankind. Yeah. I'd like that.

Rating Orb Zaknafein, Neutral Good Mediator – joined 7 years ago Dump Your Site Renewal Suggestions Here140.247.XXX.XXX7 years ago
The times, they are a-changing. The past few months have been alteration after alteration, and now we come to this: a complete Site Renewal. I suppose it was a logical next-step, but... now that it's here, there be many more things to discuss and debate over in the weeks to come. I'll give my opinion on some of these things, since I obviously have nothing better to do, and hopefully the site will become even better than it was before if the change actually comes about. Some of my responses may also include suggestions hidden away in them, usually to amend a previous suggestion in some way I feel would be useful. Anyway, here goes.

Against: Post Previews. For: Editing Comments
It seems to me that adding an "edit comment" button is certainly a necessity, but I'm not so certain that adding on "post previews" shares that need. Given the fact that an edit button already exists for forum posts, there doesn't seem to be (in my mind) a substantial reason for adding an entire new feature, especially if one could also edit comments as well. Instituting Post Previews would ostensibly help reduce errors in formatting, but, with the addition of an edit button, one can correct those errors after the fact anyway. The only benefit I can see that adding Post Previews would give is a decrease in the amount of time spent on correcting a post. While I agree that that is a benefit, I'm not certain that benefit alone justifies adding on this feature. Yes, it's certainly convenient, but is it necessary to ensure a higher quality of posts? With the addition of an "edit comment" button, it seems unlikely. Hence, I do not vote for the addition of Post Previews, as I believe the addition of various edit functions makes the feature superfluous.

For: Images in Posts. For: Moderators/Some system of Moderation
As long as images do not consume enormous chunks of the database, I see no reason not to implement their usage. However, I do believe that the potential for abuse is clearly present, and I do believe that Moderators should be instituted in order to deal with that problem. Although it's true that actual instances of pornographic pictures posted on this site would probably be quite rare, they might still occur. Given the possibility, I do not think we should simply ignore that potential and hope for the best; instead, I think we should plan ahead for a possible occurrence and put in place a system that will prevent such a thing. I believe having a board of Moderators to review pictures before allowing them to be displayed would eliminate the problem altogether, and, unless the population of this site expands dramatically in the years to come, I do not think this would pose an issue of practicality. Unless, of course, it's difficult to code, but I assume that this entire thread is operating under the assumption that all of these issues might be hard to code and that all of these things are suggestions. Obviously, if something is nigh impossible to implement, Pseudo won't waste his time on trying to make it happen, but until Word of God specifically states that such a thing is impossible, I will continue to suggest and support suggestions that I deem reasonably doable. Moving on...

For: Vote-Kicking on Chat... but!
Obviously, something must be done about the problem of chat-spammers. They periodically appear, they are always annoying, and they are utterly impossible to eradicate unless Pseudo happens to be around at that point. Because of this, it seems very practical that a system allowing members to solve the problem by themselves without the presence of Pseudo and any moderators he might appoint would be very beneficial to this site. However, I fear the power of the mob, and I wholeheartedly agree with the suggestions of other members to raise the requirements for kicking a person from chat to a level greater than a simple majority. But, even with this system, I'm still wary of the possibilities of subversion. Suppose a large group of trolls was present at a single time, and they took to kicking any good member from chat? Unlikely, I know, perhaps even impossible, but I still fear its occurrence. To solve this, why not simply prevent any member with an Orange or Red average orb (who had more than say, five ratings, to prevent victimization) from entering the chat in the first place? That way, the members that the community has consistently identified as trolls will be unable to perform their dastardly deeds unless they shape up or ship out. In the event that a person's orb became orange or red while that person was in the chat, perhaps that person could be kicked automatically? Again, I have no idea how to code this, and I'm not sure if it's possible, or even desirable, but I do think that it would be highly useful if such a system were eventually implemented.

For: Sticky Threads, "Who's Online?", and Forum Polls
All of these suggestions seem highly useful, and I see no real reason not to implement them. They are designed to help make this site better, and I think that carrying out such measures would help achieve that goal. Of course, if they were not carried out because of technical reasons or somesuch, the site probably wouldn't be much worse off. Still, these suggestions appear to be valuable additions to the site, and I wholeheartedly support them.

Although that's all I have for now, I think that starting this thread was an ingenious idea, and I hope that the collective mind of Fig Hunter can help produce a site truly worthy of Rating Orb A β Pseudolonewolf's genius.
I am but a Seeker after Truth.
